Miller High Life: Real men die of heart attacks at 35

I just ran across these commercials over at Sociological Images that really exemplify how ridiculous the cult of masculinity is in advertising these days:

Fat and grease= Real Man juice, obviously.

Real Men stick it to foreigners by not using their dirty unpatriotic oil!

Real Men can park their boat while it's still attached to their SUV (interesting choice after the "boo foreign oil" one.)

And what would a tribute to mandom be without a dig at the ladies?

And of course, Real Men can keep their mouths shut when forced to listen to the inane prattling of women. Even though a Real Man (or any man, really) is always right, he must stifle his urge to "correct" even the "most misguided of opinions" of women, or else face their irrational womanly wrath.

This isn't the first time I've run into "manvertising" (the Pepsi ads or the Burger King manthem anyone?), but I found these ads more troubling somehow. I get that these ads are supposed to be at least a little tongue in cheek, but the ideals they support are still very real. And they're unhealthy, both emotionally and physically.

What do you guys think?

real men (tm), masculinity
