I don't know how many of you are online video gamers, but if you are, you've probably experienced sexism while doing it. One girl who games got fed up with the bullshit, and started
this website Not in the Kitchen Anymore to expose the sexist assholes who harass her in game. Here's an excerpt from the description of the website:
I am a 23 year old gamer, who specializes in first person shooters (at the moment, Call of Duty specifically). When I game online, I record audio in the lobbies of people reacting to playing against a female gamer. Sometimes the reactions are humorous, or confusing, and sometimes they are downright insulting. Even though female gamers are becoming more and more common, we are still largely treated as an anomaly.
She also writes about general
issues affecting women gamers occasionally too. I don't think I can link straight to any of the audio recordings, but I've added an excerpt of one of the transcripts from her site taken from a post called
"Kitchen Talk" (RMP means Random Male Player, and 'Me' is Jenny talking):
Me: Yeah, we got [unintelligible] so I gotta get my house clean for the guy who’s staying with our dogs and shit.
RMP2: You’re gonna make someone a good wife.
RMP1: Oh shit. Oh shit.
RMP2: Know your role.
Me: …Wow.
[laughter]
Molly: Wait, Jenny, you’re leaving?
Me: After this game.
RMP1: Is she potty-trained?
RMP3: Make me a sandwich.
RMP1: BITCH.
RMP3: Get in the kitchen and make me a sandwich.
RMP1: BITCH.
So, yeah. If you feel like having a rage attack... Listen to some of the audio recordings. Then have a strong drink after.
