brown and white lemuroid ringtail possums

Aug 19, 2010 13:48

I just came across this adorable two species of ringtail possums which have thought to gone extinct during a heat wave in 2005. The brown ringtail possum is still vulnerable, but it seems that the future for the white ringtail possums is even dimer. They are very sensitive to climate change(they can't survive temperatures above 30°C for more than a few hours) and there's a few articles claiming that 'global warming' has destroyed the white ringtail population. The wiki article claims for them to have gone extinct in 2009 but then goes to say that three of them were found since then. Even if there was a few found, doesn't seem like they have much of a chance. Just thought I should share these unfortunate adorable mammals.

These were just the info I could find.
