I've always known that tropical frogs come in all colours of the rainbow, but these are hardly tropical, so it surprised me a little.
Last week, as I was travelling from Gdańsk to Warsaw I stopped at a roadside restaurant in Masuria. Looking out of the window we saw some little bluish things on the surface of a pond. After a while we noticed that they were moving. After the meal we went outside to have a closer look at them. They turned out to be frogs.
Yep. All the little bluish things here are frogs. It was hard to take a better picture, because most of the blue ones were near the middle of the pond, while the area near the banks was occupied by larger greenish brown ones. But we found one:
After some googling I found out that they were most likely male
moor frogs in the mating season. The additional bit of WTF is that they only look like that for a couple of days each year. Yep. Colour-changing frogs that turn bright blue when they're horny.
The other frog in this picture is most likely the female.
