The concept is a birth without the sexual act of conception. The easiest way to explain this, and gather the notoriety worthy of such a finding in sharks, is to make everybody who reads this article realize just what happened by looking at the headline.

In reference to the cultural implications of the concept of virginity in sharks and nature:
a.) The definition of virgin is someone who has been without sexual intercourse thus far. The definition of sexual intercourse is relatively unclear in society. Most people agree on man on woman intercourse as a standard, but some require an orgasm by one or both parties. Again, others feel that oral sex constitutes a loss of innocence. (Hard-line abstinence supporters and homosexuals alike) Then you also have the concept of anal sex. Which is seen as a state of virginity by people who are abstinent (in their own opinion) and need to get their rocks off, or as a form of sexual intercourse by male homosexuals.
b.) Science should not be forced to justify analysis of natural processes according to the contrived courtesies of modern English.
