Wouldn't it be different with giant african land snails, though, since those are major goddamn contraband? The initial shipments aren't scrutinized for them? (I mean, I dunno what the sitch is like for millipedes in Canada, but if you look at the gov websites for snails it's like SNAILS ARE EVIL WE KEEL THEM ALLLLLLL!!! I can understand why from an ecological perspective, but I would totally apply and pay for a license to keep the little/big dudes, so it makes me sad.)
Oh. Well, we can get in trouble just for keeping 'em - probably because snails can definitely survive in some parts of our climate. Apparently in the sixties like a couple of snails got loose 'cause one kid released them in Florida, and it cost millions to get rid of the resulting explosion.
Like I said, it's not that I don't understand, but the double standard between "cute and fuzzy" and "cute and slimy" pisses me off. Give me a break, like outdoor cats don't cause rampant destruction of native wildlife every year, you know? If there was a happy medium, the government would get money from people's licenses.
Ahahaha. "LOST - PET SNAIL. DOES NOT ANSWER TO 'SHELLY.'"
But in all seriousness, I don't think the government is worried about snails getting lost; they're worried about irresponsible pet owners getting bored and "setting them free."
