It's my understanding that the bright coloring of the mouths of some baby birds is there to make sure the parent bird knows what part to feed. At least, I have heard that explanation given for the American crow:
Yes, that is true. Some inner beak patterns/colors are specie specific. There are some birds that are parasitic and deposit their eggs into other nests so that the nest-owner is left to feed their baby! And the reason why the nest-owner is duped is because the inside of the beak of the intruder is similar to that of her own fledglings.
