You got some really good pics. This is one palce I would really like to visit, someday.
Do you mind if I share the pics w/ my folks? They visited that area a few times several yrs ago. I'm sure they would really enjoy lookin at your pictures.
Ok, I admit: I've completely lost the ability to tell when you're joking. I know they're pro simplicity, but didn't know they actually took umbrage at having their picture taken.. Quick! To the Internet: www.amish.net sez: "The Amish people do not pose for pictures because they believe that photographs violate the biblical teaching against making graven images (Exodus 20:4). Also, they are concerned that pictures will promote self-pride. They may put their hands or hats over their faces, look away or take evasive action to avoid having their picture taken"
So is it OK if you only use a digital camera since it's not technically engraving? Not that traditional photography is actually engraving either though... I do find it amusing that this page actually has pictures of Amish folks on the same page where it says they don't like having their pictures taken. WTF?
I'll have to remember the digital camera question if I head back there. It could be an amusing question. I can imagine the conversation now:
Bill (to Amish man): So, I understand that Amish people don't like to have their picture taken; is that correct? Amish Man: Yeh. B: Why is that? A: Because we are not to make graven images because it could promote pride-- a deadly sin. B: What about pictures with a digital camera if they're not printed? A: What is a "digital camera"? B: <... explaination of digital cameras leaving out as many technical bits as possible ...> A: What is "printed"? B: *sigh*
I didn't know that was serious, but apparently according to Hugh it may be. Amish people are silly that way. I think that one or two let me take their picture, but there are Mennonites around there, too, and so they may have been one of the Amish-look-alikes. Darned imposters!
