Well, 2009 is over. It was a pretty terrible year for many people I care about, and for that reason I'm glad to see it go. For me personally, it was pretty much a year of being in a holding pattern, in that I'm finishing the year pretty much where I started it. Given that I started it being happily married, gainfully and interestingly employed, and reasonably healthy, that's nothing to complain about. Still, there are many things I'm looking forward to in 2010.
One of the things I'm looking forward to most is buying a house. Things are afoot there - we're preparing to make some offers. I'm not sure whether either of the two current best prospects is going to pan out, but it looks like we can expect to be homeowners in the not-too-distant future.
I don't make New Year's Resolutions, but I have been keeping a list of "100 Things I'd Like to Do Someday", and this year I fulfilled the following:
- Spend a minimum of 1 hour per week at work dealing with bugs. (This seems like a small and silly thing, but by setting aside 1 hour/week on my calendar to work on bugs, I've cut my average backlog of un-dealt-with bugs by more than half.)
- Attend a DITA user's meeting (more professional development).
- Complete the Podrunner 1st Day to 5k program. (I completed it on the elliptical machine, which doesn't completely translate into actual running prowess, but I'm still proud of having done it.)
- Do a charity run/walk. (I did the JP Morgan Chase Corporate challenge, covering 3.5 miles in slightly less than an hour, earning the distinction of officially being the slowest runner on my corporate team.)
I also fulfilled a vaguer ambition to "Visit San Francisco more often", and made good progress on my goal of watching or listening to every televised Doctor Who story. (There remain 43 classic series Doctor Who stories that I haven't seen.)
At the moment, however, I really ought to get off of livejournal, and focus on the very immediate goals of decluttering my desk (I can no longer see the surface), and figuring out what to make for dinner tonight. Have a very happy New Year, all of you!
