That icon is awesome. I forgot to steal it from leigh57, but I totally forgot. Now I'm reminded. *snagstoputonmydesktopsoiremembertouploadit*
Anyway, I think it's cool that you're experiencing (and telling us all about!) the incongruity of what people expect vs. the reality of the culture. Also! It's kinda sad that so much of western materialism gets absorbed by other cultures, BUT. It's good because you get to experience some of the holidays/decorations/festive stuff.
As far as haggling I have NO skills in that whatsoever. I'd probably just operate off the basis that if I'm paying pennies to what I pay in the U.S. and can afford the ticket price, why bother trying to talk them down? So that would be my "out" of the entire process, unless it's perceived there as flashy to walk around and NOT haggle. Idk! I just know I would be SO BAD at that.
Hope you have an awesome tree-lighting ceremony. :)
OMG. I was SOOOOO bad at the haggling. So bad. But it's mostly because I felt bad about it. I mean, sure, the sticker price is probably over priced but I still felt bad about asking for something lower
( ... )
Haggling! Wow, I would be so terrible and stressed out about that. Seriously. I'd need my mom -- she's perfect! However, beyond that the rest of it sounds amazing, and again it's great to hear that your deployed life isn't 100% sucking during the holidays.
And tree lighting, yay! I was staring at ours last night and thinking how completely awesome it is.
I'm so glad you like the icon. I'm still freaking out over the ludicrous adorable of that picture.

Me neither! In fact, it's prompted me to go back and read all your Jack/Renee fic on my day off. They were wonderful when I had to spend TWO HOURS doing laundry this "morning" because we're the only ones on a night schedule so all the washers/dryers were packed.
And haggling. Yeah. I sucked. Royally. I had to get a guy I was with to come do it for me. Fail boat = me. But, eh, I figure I've got time to learn.
I WANNA SEE YOUR TREE! I didn't get a chance to decorate mine back in CA with my parents before I left and I don't think they've done it yet. Slackers.
I should get off my lazy butt and do a winter/Christmas picspam. And I'm so glad my fic entertained you when you were doing laundry, although ugh to everything being packed. I remember that from college.
I know I owe you fic at this point -- muse is not working. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope she comes out of hiding, or back from her winter vacation, or whatever. But I also have a sick kid and stuff, so good times!
Do you? I didn't think I was up again until later on in December. That being said, I would not frown upon a new fic from you. On the other hand, it is Christmas and sick children and, you know, the general madness that is the holiday season. No wonder your muse has run away to a tropical island to leave you hanging.
Maybe you should do these as a post-holiday, keep you in the spirit, type of gift. I don't know. But I don't want you to be stressed over fic right now...that's not cool.
