Cara's Apartment, Saturday Morning

The advantage of having your own place was that you could ensure the morning sun never got in your eyes, but that didn't stop Cara from pulling the blankets over her head when the room got far too bright, far too early.

"Make it go away," she whined, ever the height of maturity.

[For the girl.]

"Sugar, if I knew how to make the sun go away, I woulda done it ages ago," Surreal sighed, still half-asleep. "Stop whining."

"I'm not," Cara whined, pressing her face against Surreal's shoulder to block out the light. "It's too bright."

She was certain she'd bought curtains to fix that ages ago.

"It's the sun. The entire point is that it's bright," Surreal muttered, throwing an arm over her eyes. "When did you get rid of the curtains?"

"I didn't," Cara protested, cracking open an eyelid. "I did get rid of these sheets."

Which had been a tragedy, they'd been amazingly comfortable before they'd worn out.

"You didn't break them out just for the reunion in an attempt to be funny?" Surreal checked, rolling over to peer at Cara. "...I thought it was your attempt at humor."

"I have a better sense of humour than that." That was debatable, Cara.

Surreal snorted in amusement. "No you don't, sugar," she said, deciding to use her partner as her new pillow. "You really, really don't."

You were lucky Cara was helpless against that kind of thing, Surreal. "You realise if the island's done this to the sheets it's probably done it to the cupboards as well," she said, running a hand down Surreal's back. "We won't have any groceries."

Or that fresh batch of nutcakes.
