Like usual, Cara had avoided the picnic. Instead she went running in the preserve until she was almost too tired to lift her feet enough to climb the stairs back up to her room

Richard was hoping to surprise Cara, but he definitely didn't consider himself an unpleasant one. Unlike some people, he also possessed enough manners to knock on her door instead of just trying to open it.
She might have been half-naked, but Cara reached for an agiel instead of her leathers before heading towards the door. The one would be more useful than the other, after all.
She stood to one side as she turned the lock, tightening her grip and feeling the reassuring bite against her palm.
"Stabling the horses." They'd decided that after last time it'd be less awkward all around if they didn't both knock, and flipped a coin for it. "...are you wearing my shirt?"
It was that, or bring up the fact she'd opened the door with a weapon, and he suspected he'd actually get an answer for the first.
Honestly, Richard was more surprised by the apology than the sudden nudity. Not that that stopped him stammering "Wait, that wasn't what I meant," as he rather helpessly took the shirt.
He averted his eyes and nudged the door shut again, waiting for the jibe from Cara about protecting her modesty.
Given that as far as Cara was concerned being 'fine' included being turned into a baneling, Richard was sceptical of that answer. Of course he couldn't exactly press the issue without it turning into a case of Cara sticking her heels in and bringing up the whole 'Lord Rahl' thing, so it would probably be better to leave that to Kahlan.
"Let me help you with those," he said instead, trying to think of a graceful change of subject. "So, how's Clark?"
For just one moment, Cara's face crumpled. She forced it back into some semblance of a smooth mask, before replying. "I wouldn't know." That much at least was the truth.
It mightn't have been there very long, Richard had seen that look before and it had involved a Mord'Sith temple full of skeletons. "Did something happen?"
Which probably ranked amongst the most obvious questions ever, but frankly, navigating a minefield required less care and delicacy than trying to talk to Cara about her feelings.

With that she pulled the shirt off and offered it back to Richard.

Because he was going to get an honest answer to that.
