A/N: this is a new mutant power series that I'm currently writing. I've also written a few related oneshots earlier.

Happy Birthday, Jaejoong!

“Well done, Minnie.” Jaejoong claps a hand on Changmin’s shoulder, but frowns slightly when he notices the stiff expression on the younger boy’s face. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know if we can trust them.”

Jaejoong looks puzzled. “Then why did you bring them back?”

“Because Yoochun hyung said he believed them.” Changmin shrugs helplessly, and Jaejoong smiles in complete understanding.

Dana hears this short exchange and bites her lip. “We’re telling the truth.”

Jaejoong glances at Changmin before facing Dana. “Then, would you agree to someone reading your mind just to confirm this?”

She hesitates only briefly before nodding, despite Lina’s surprised frown. Jaejoong closes his eyes and concentrates for about fifteen seconds before opening his eyes again. “Thank you.” He says politely, and Changmin’s posture becomes less rigid.

Jungsu thinks back to a time when Jaejoong wouldn’t have asked before searching someone’s mind. Even nowadays as he asks permission before doing so, people still can’t lie to him mind-to-mind.

Donghae can’t stop staring at the four girls straight out of his dream. Kyuhyun notices and taps him on the shoulder tentatively. “Hyung, are you okay?”

Donghae jerks slightly and gives him a half-smile. “Yeah. It’s just kind of weird seeing them right in front of us here.” But then he shivers involuntarily, and Kyuhyun knows that he’s thinking about the torturous pain he envisioned them undergoing.

“It’s going to be okay, hyung. They’ll be safe here.” He tries to reassure Donghae, whose smile then brightens a little.

The Director finally speaks up. “Would you mind telling us how you came to work for him?”

Stephanie’s expression saddens and Lina heaves a sigh. “He came to find me when I was younger, after my powers had started. He…he promised to help me control them properly.”

Some of the boys shift uncomfortably, having come to the Academy for similar reasons. “I thought this was a great opportunity, and I told him about my other three friends who’d also recently gotten powers-”

Lina breaks off as a look of self-loathing comes on her face, and Dana continues. “When we realised what his reasons were for taking us in, he tortured us with his power and threatened to do worse if we didn’t do what he told us to.”

Stephanie clenches her fists. “He tortured Sunday more than the rest of us, and now she’s mentally…like a child.” All gazes fall upon the girl, who physically looks about Kibum’s age, but her expression resembles that of a 10-year old. Ryeowook blinks back tears with difficulty, and Jongwoon pats his back comfortingly.

An awkward silence ensues, before Sungmin asks the question that’s on everybody’s mind. “What’s going to happen when that guy realises that they’ve escaped to here?”

“I don’t see how he can force them to come back, considering that there are 22 of us with powers here, and only one of him.” Kibum points out after doing some quick counting.

“He’s got that private army of his own, remember?” Donghee recalls the seemingly countless armed men they had to fight off, and the girls nod sombrely.

The Director looks thoughtful. “Does he have government backing?”

Dana looks at Lina before shaking her head. “Not that we know of. That army of his is paid for by himself.”

Yunho’s brows furrow close together. “If that’s the case, then can’t we just report him to the police if he tries to attack us again?”

Youngwoon silently bemoans how everyone else looks surprised at such a normal suggestion, which clearly means that they were all automatically thinking about another full-blown fight based on powers again.

“…Yeah, why don’t we just do that?” Siwon looks visibly happier at the idea of not having to fight anyone. “And it’s not like they-” He gestures politely to the four girls. “-are legally bound to stay with and work for that man, right? He doesn’t have any claim over them, and they can get a restraining order or something like that…”

“But if we bring the police into the matter, won’t they want to know why he’s after them?” Hyukjae worries. “And if they find out about our abilities, it won’t be good for all of us.” It’s an awful thought, especially for those who have been on the receiving end of those unwilling to accept their mutations, like Donghae.

“Wait a minute. Are we just going to wait for him to attack before doing something about him?” Heechul demands.

“He might not even send people to attack our house again.” Junsu points out, after a quick glance at Yoochun. “What if he kidnaps them secretly just like he did to the others? Then we’d probably never be able to break in again to rescue them.”

“Exactly.” Heechul nods in agreement. “They can’t spend the rest of their lives looking over their shoulders, waiting for him to take control of them. We all can’t live like that.” He points at everyone in the room in a circular motion.

“What course of action can we take against him?” Jungsu counters. “We can’t have him legally arrested because we don’t want to be publicly exposed. And we can’t get rid of him forever by using our powers on him.” Or rather, Changmin thinks, they can, but they won’t. And there lies the greatest difference between them and him.

Director Lee stands up from his seat, a weary look on his face. “I will check up on the legal proceedings and issues. For now, just get a good night’s rest and we will figure out what to do next.”

--

Siwon returns from his early morning jog to see his roommate evidently disturbed by a bad dream. Siwon debates for a moment whether to wake him up, but seeing the pained expression on Han Geng’s face, he decides that it wouldn’t hurt him to get up a little earlier.

“Hyung, wake up.” He shakes Han Geng’s arm gently at first, then more insistently.

Han Geng’s eyes fly open in shock and he grasps Siwon’s forearm tightly as he sits up, his breathing heavy.

“Ow!” Siwon yanks his arm out of Han Geng’s grip and stares at his forearm in shock.

“I…oh, it was only a dream... sorry, Siwon-” His voice dies down as he sees a burn mark formed on Siwon’s forearm.

“What happened?” He asks in astonishment, too surprised to heal it automatically as he normally does.

“You grabbed my arm, and then it started burning - can you please heal it, hyung? It hurts!” Siwon sounds uncharacteristically frightened, and Han Geng hastily heals it, apologising in a hurry.

“How did it happen?” Han Geng stares at the newly healed forearm in bewilderment. “It just burned? But I do not…I cannot do that. I’m not Heechul!”

The mention of their pyrokinetic friend stirs something in Siwon’s memory. “Hey, didn’t Heechul hyung burn himself the other day? And you healed him, right?”

Han Geng nods slowly, trying to remember clearly. “He burned himself on his arm - in the same place as yours.”

“Does this mean…” Siwon’s eyebrows fly upwards in amazement, “that you transferred the injury you healed from Heechul hyung to me? I didn’t know you could do that!”

Han Geng looks at a loss for words. “Neither did I.”

--

The potential new development in Han Geng’s powers causes a lot of excitement and Sungmin is the first to volunteer to see if their Chinese friend can really transfer injuries.

“Are you sure?” Ryeowook asks anxiously, though secretly longing to see it happen to someone.

“Well, he’s got to test it out to see if it really works.” Sungmin says with ruthless logic. “And he can always heal it again afterwards. It doesn’t have to be a terribly serious injury.” But his expression wavers slightly. “Does it?”

“I do not know what I can do.” Han Geng shrugs helplessly.

“I wonder if he can only cause the injury he last healed, like in reverse order.” Changmin muses.

Kibum drums his fingers thoughtfully. “Hyung, was the burn from Heechul hyung the last one you healed before giving it to Siwonnie?” Han Geng thinks for a while before nodding.

“Well, then it’s pretty easy to test. Since he healed Siwon from that burn this morning, it’s still the last one he healed.” Kyuhyun points out. “So all he has to do is try to transfer a different injury to Sungmin hyung.” He quirks a brow cheekily. “For example, the injury Stephanie-ssi gave to Hyukjae hyung that knocked him out.”

Stephanie winces uncomfortably. Sungmin glares at the younger boy and jabs him in the side. “How could you be so cruel to your favourite hyung?”

“Maybe Hankyung should start smaller first, so that he doesn’t tire himself out.” Jungsu suggests. “Didn’t someone sprain an ankle recently?”

Hyukjae raises his hand, to Donghae’s surprise, not knowing how Hyukjae hadn’t wanted him to feel bad about his dream projections inadvertently causing it. Han Geng remembers healing it, and moves to sit in front of Sungmin, who rolls up his jeans.

Han Geng puts a hand on Sungmin’s ankle and concentrates, trying to remember the feel of the injury before. In a few seconds, Sungmin gasps in pain as his ankle starts to swell, and all the onlookers stare in disbelief.

“You did it, Hannie!” Heechul exults, clapping him on the back. Sungmin gingerly tests his weight on his foot to check that his ankle is indeed well and truly sprained.

“Wow. Could you heal it again, please?” Sungmin looks thrilled that it worked, barely showing that he feels any pain. Han Geng nods cheerily and heals it in no time. The other boys are used to seeing Han Geng’s normal powers, but the four girls are wide-eyed.

“Can he heal everything?” Sunday asks excitedly, and Junsu shrugs.

“He’s managed to heal most things, I think. He hasn’t tried to cure cancer yet, though.”

“Can- can you heal mental traumas as well?” Dana inquires, with a slight tremble in her voice as her gaze flickers towards Sunday briefly.

The room falls quiet and Han Geng looks a little confused. “You mean…” Siwon explains it to him a little more clearly in Chinese, gesturing towards his temple for emphasis.

“Ah. I have never tried that before.” The slightly hopeful expressions of the other three girls fall as Han Geng looks genuinely sorry that he has no experience in the area.

:You can always ask the Director about that. He has a gift for understanding how things work. Dana jerks her head around in confusion at the foreign voice in her head before noticing Jaejoong looking at her meaningfully.

--

Director Lee looks up after concentrating on Sunday for a few minutes. She seems a little uncomfortable from having to sit still in his office and endure the older man’s staring, not quite understanding what’s going on.

“Can she be healed?” Stephanie asks nervously.

The Director glances at Han Geng thoughtfully before replying. “The problem is both physical and psychological. I believe that Han Geng is capable of healing the physical injury done to her brain.”

Dana bites her lip. “But not the psychological part?”

Director Lee smiles slightly. “Once the physical brain is healed, the psychological part can be helped with other methods, like counselling and therapy.”

“You mean,” Lina’s gaze flickers tellingly towards Jaejoong before settling on the Director, “a regular psychiatrist can help her become normal again?”

Jaejoong fully understands what she’s thinking of even without reading her mind. It would be nice and neat if he could just telepathically change Sunday’s mind back to normal, except that he doesn’t have a clue how to go about doing so.

Before he can voice this out, Director Lee nods at Lina, his smile a little wry. “Not all problems require mutant powers to be solved, you know. Don’t underestimate the abilities of regular people.”
