Summary: In which all 18 boys have super powers, and are forced to learn to use them to defend themselves when a powerful enemy kidaps some of their own. Being a teenager has never been this hard.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters nor the concept of the powers. I also realise other writers may have had the same type of story before; please rest assured that I'm not trying to plagiarise your ideas!
A/N: this is a new mutant power series that I'm currently writing. I've also written a few related oneshots earlier.
Hyukjae blinks blearily and turns to peer at the clock on the bedside chest. He groans as he sees the glow-in-the-dark hands indicate three o’clock. He sleepily wonders why he’s woken up in the middle of the night, when it normally takes Donghae five minutes just to shake him out of bed in the morning. Sometime’s a stinky sock does the trick, but that’s only for drastic measures.
Unable to fall back asleep immediately, he opens his eyes again, letting them adjust slowly to the darkness in the room when a strange blob of blackness catches his attention. He blinks harder, trying to remember whether Donghae left one of his art sculpture things in the middle of the room again.
And then the blob moves.
Now he’s fully awake and desperately trying to figure out what the hell is in their room, while thinking frantically of all his previously thought-out escape plans. It doesn’t remotely resemble anything human, still looking like an unidentifiable blob. A very large unidentifiable blob.
Then something glides past, and Hyukjae stares at a much smaller blob moving around in the air. It makes its way above his bed, and he decides right then and there that he’s going crazy, because it looks like a fish.
The big blob seems to notice - if it even has the capacity to notice anything - the fish blob’s presence and it moves at a speed that Hyukjae wouldn’t have credited to something of that size, chasing after the small blob.
The little fish acts like it’s swimming in the air, and he can practically feel its panic as it plummets and ascends quickly, dodging the large blob’s advances. A tiny voice at the back of Hyukjae’s mind screams at him to stop watching it as if it’s a damn movie and get himself and Donghae out of there.
Before he can think of a plan, the large blob lunges in the direction of his bed, and he scrambles out ungracefully from under the covers, speeding towards the wall furthest away from it in a split second in his attempt to distance himself.
Can I get around it? The fish zooms past Hyukjae’s face and the big blob turns quickly to face him. That thing’s going to kill me trying to catch that stupid fish-blob… He barely manages to slip past the shapeless black thing and collides into the wall. I’ll never see my mum again…Junsu will probably laugh at my funeral…why isn’t Donghae WAKING UP?
--
Jaejoong growls in annoyance. Hyukjae’s crazy thoughts - though he can’t really hear exactly what the other boy is thinking, it’s all so jumbled - are keeping him awake, and he refuses to lose sleep over some nightmare the other boy must be having.
He flings the blankets aside, steals Yunho’s bedroom slippers and goes out.
--
Changmin isn’t a particularly light sleeper, but anyone would wake up after having something hit their wall on the other side. Kibum also stirs, looking at Changmin in confusion. “Did I hear something fall?”
Changmin points accusingly at the wall they share with the two older boys. “I swear, if they’re playing midnight soccer again, I’m going to teleport them to the Sahara and leave them there to shrivel up and die.”
Kibum winces at the thought of a wrinkly Hyukjae and Donghae, but follows Changmin out the door to have a look anyway. An angry Changmin is always entertaining.
--
Hyukjae’s swift legs get tangled in the blankets and he falls to the floor, ignoring the pain as his ankle twists, absolutely sure that he’s about to get buffeted by the large blob moving towards him. It draws nearer, then it’s right in front of him, and then it passes through him.
Nerves wind up his spine as he gapes at it in growing horror. The only feeling he can liken it to is the first time he bumped into Kibum, or rather, when Kibum phased through him like he wasn’t really there. Just when his brain feels like it’s going into shock, the door opens.
“Stupid Hyukjae- wait. You’re awake?” Jaejoong stares at him, and then follows the direction of Hyukjae’s terrified gaze to see the nightmarish scene unfolding before them. “What the hell is going on?” Jaejoong tries to freeze the blobs with his mind, but to no avail.
Changmin and Kibum bump into Jaejoong at the doorway, and their eyes widen simultaneously at the sight. Snapping out of his reverie first, Changmin seizes the moment when the two blobs are further away from Donghae to appear by his bedside, and teleports the sleeping boy to the doorway where the others are.
Kibum wonders how Donghae could possibly sleep through the entire thing, when he realises that the two shapeless creatures are absolutely silent in their movement. He notices that they phase through the furniture and everything else in the room just as easily as he can.
“This can’t be happening…” Hyukjae whispers. “They’re…they’re not…are they even real? Am I just dreami-” He stops as the words finally click in his brain and he whips around and stares at the sleeping boy on the ground.
“DONGHAE, WAKE UP!” His voice rings sharply, and Donghae finally opens his eyes groggily, yawning and stretching up.
“What…why? I’m still tired.”
But no one pays attention to his mumbled complaint, all eyes on the room suddenly devoid of any manner of blob. “They disappeared.” Kibum states, as if to convince himself that it really happened.
“Donghae hyung, what were you dreaming of?” Changmin looks at him seriously, and Donghae rubs his eyes.
“Eh? Oh, I think I was a fish or something. It seems to be a recurring character of mine.” He flashes his pointy-toothed smile.
“Were you being chased by something in your dream?” Jaejoong crouches down in front of him and Donghae nods in surprise.
“Yeah, this big scary black sea monster thing was trying to eat me! I was trying to swim away from it in the ocean, but it just kept chasing me.”
“He…he just projected his dream out into reality.” Changmin sounds awed, and Donghae looks understandably puzzled.
“What are you guys talking about?”
--
Donghae is shocked by the time Hyukjae finishes recounting the entire thing and Changmin tries to think of an explanation for the manifestation of Donghae’s dream.
“Look, we’ll bring it up to the Director tomorrow. Right now we all need to get some sleep, okay?” Jaejoong’s voice is firm, and they all agree, the three boys returning to their own rooms.
“Don’t worry too much about it. It means you can do even more things than you thought you could!” Hyukjae sounds rather pleased for a guy who was shaking in terror in the corner not fifteen minutes ago. Donghae nods unconvincingly and slips back underneath the covers.
There is silence in the dark room for a long time, before Hyukjae speaks. “Hae-yah, you’re not sleeping?”
“…no?” Donghae sounds surprised that Hyukjae can tell, and the other boy sighs.
“You normally snore really loudly, you know. Kind of like a pig-”
“Hey!” Hyukjae can practically hear the pout in Donghae’s voice, and chuckles warmly.
“You don’t have to worry about whether it happens again, Hae. If it gets bad then I’ll just wake you up again.”
“Are you sure you won’t get hurt by it?” Hyukjae’s heart melts at the anxiety and concern in his roommate’s tone, and fails to mention the twisted ankle.
“It’s not really there, I think. It’s a bit like a movie screening - you can see it, but it won’t touch you.” He attempts to sound reassuring. But then another thought occurs to him. “Do you normally have this kind of dream? You know, the kind where you’re being chased by something?”
Donghae turns in his bed to face Hyukjae. “Yeah. It kind of just goes on and on, and you know you can’t stop to breathe because the moment you do, you’ll be caught.” Hyukjae keeps quiet, acutely aware of how relevant it is to their current situation.
“I wish I could run like you do.”
Hyukjae sits up in his bed and runs a hand through his mussed-up hair. “Sometimes running away doesn’t solve anything, Donghae-yah.” He sighs and flops back down with a soft thud. Sometimes running away just means you get caught later, even more vulnerable than before.
--
Hyukjae jerks awake again after a horrible dream involving clowns and strangely colourful anchovies, and slaps a hand over his eyes after seeing that it’s half an hour before his usual waking time, which means by the time he really falls back asleep he’ll need to get up again.
It occurs to him that the same thing might have happened again, and he quickly sits up in bed to look around the room. Sure enough, black shapes are bobbing around the room like before, and Hyukjae quells the involuntary urge to scream and throw something at them.
He wonders whether it’s necessary to wake Donghae up, but then remembers Donghae’s predictive dreams and decides instead to observe the shapes and try to decipher what might be going on.
Moving quietly to his desk, he takes out his video-camera and starts recording what he sees. The black apparitions are clearer than before, and Hyukjae can easily make out what looks like figures of people.
One, two, three people on the left side, they look more like girls than guys. He moves the video-camera to film the other side. Two people, the bigger one looks like a guy…he’s talking to that girl…
And then the girl figure suddenly crouches down, ostensibly in fear of the male, and a few seconds later looks like she’s having a bout of fits, the figure wracked with spasms. Hyukjae frowns, and then pans out to capture the other three female figures that are moving slightly towards her, but then retreat again.
The more Hyukjae stares at the black figures, the more defined they appear to be, and he’s unsure whether it’s he who’s getting used to them, or if Donghae’s unconsciously getting more detailed in the projection. The male figure moves towards the three girl figures, and they appear to back away slowly, and as it continues, Hyukjae can almost make out some sort of bone structure on their faces.
The tallest girl figure abruptly dashes over to the seemingly pained body of the last girl, only to immediately raise her hands to grasp at her head, in an action that looks somewhat like someone suffering from a migraine attack.
The other two girls on the left tremble as the male turns towards them and stretches out his hand, followed by both of them collapsing to the ground in similar agony to the others.
Then, to Hyukjae’s surprise, the figures disappear, and he quickly shifts his attention to Donghae, who’s yawning and slowly waking up. For a moment as Donghae stretches sleepily Hyukjae thinks he’s never seen anything so cute before, but the weight of the video-camera in his hand brings him back to the situation at present, and he stops the recording.
Crouching down beside Donghae’s bed, he waits for him as he rubs his eyes and blinks several times. “G’morning, Hyukkie.” Donghae smiles, and Hyukjae feels the corners of his mouth inadvertently going up as well.
“Do you remember what you dreamed, just before you woke up?”
Donghae looks confused and tries to remember. “Yes…in fact I think it was a sort of vision- wait, how did you know?”
Hyukjae holds up the video-camera. “Remember how you kind of made the things in your dream come alive last night? You did it again, and I recorded some of it so we can look at it just in case it’s important.”
Donghae’s eyes widen in admiration, and Hyukjae feels pleased at his own ingenuity.

I hope people haven't totally forgotten this story! Please comment and share your thoughts with me :D
