Chapter 9

“Junsu-yah!” Eunhyuk ran over to the field where his friend was standing, looking a little lost as people bustled around them.

“Hyukkie! I haven’t seen you in forever!” Junsu hugged him firmly.

Eunhyuk raised an eyebrow. “I saw you three weeks ago! Is your memory that bad?”

Junsu rolled his eyes. “Well, it feels like forever. Anyway, this is Jang Riin.” He gestured to the petite girl next to him who smiled and bowed politely, Eunhyuk doing the same.

“I can’t imagine why anyone would want to be your girlfriend, though. She must see something in you that I don’t.” Eunhyuk quipped, and Junsu slapped him on the back while laughing.

Then suddenly a large group of noisy boys got off a bus that had come through the gate. Everyone stared at them before Liyin smiled. “That’s the Geosang High School basketball team.”

She made her way over and tapped a tall boy on the shoulder. “Han Geng gege!”

He looked and broke into a surprised smile. “Zhang Liyin!” They starting conversing excitedly in Chinese and Eunhyuk gaped at the sight. It really was Hankyung, the second boy to have been attacked in that series of terror events! The basketball player looked even cooler in real life, and Eunhyuk wished he had a camera with him.

“Do you know what they’re saying?”

Junsu scrunched up his face in an effort to remember what little of the language he’d picked up. “Something like…’long time no see’?”

Eunhyuk stared at him in mock disappointment. “Right…I couldn’t have guessed that myself, Su.”

“You try learning another language!” Junsu retorted. “Anyway, I think she’ll probably want to talk to her cousin some more, so why don’t you introduce me to your dance group?”

“…oh, right.”

--

Kangin was talking to a classmate selling kimbap at one of the stalls when he heard some loud noises to his left, and turned to see that Eeteuk had evidently bumped into some male students he’d never seen before in their school.

A cursory glance at their attire told him that they were from Geosang High, which meant that they were either part of the visiting basketball team or a supporter from the school.

“Why don’t you watch where you’re going?” One of the boys was dusting himself off as he spoke angrily.

“I’m sorry.” Eeteuk bowed in apology.

“What kind of a costume is this anyway?” Another boy pinched the soft fur of the arm in incredulity, laughing as he dropped it after.

A bespectacled boy rolled his eyes. “He must be the school mascot, idiots.”

“More like the school freak, if you ask me.” The one who Eeteuk had bumped into spat in annoyance. “Who the hell dresses up in a stupid costume and walks around without looking where he’s going?”

Kangin strode up to them, fists clenched in anger. “Hey, he already said he was sorry!”

“If apologies could solve anything, we wouldn’t need the police now, would we?” The second boy replied acidly, as his friends nodded behind him. “Since he bumped into my friend, I think it’s only fair that we return the favour.”

With that, he grabbed a basketball from one of his mates and threw it, letting it rebound off Eeteuk, who stumbled backwards in pain while the boy caught his ball.

Kangin quickly caught Eeteuk and steadied him. “Yah, if you’re looking for a fight, I’ll give you one!”

--

Eunhyuk winced as Junsu told Donghae another embarrassing story about him when they were young, regretting ever having introduced his best friend to the grinning dancer, who was laughing as Junsu got more animated about the story.

He noticed Shindong running up to him, a look of worry etched on his typically jovial face. “Kangin’s in trouble!”

“What- what are you talking about?” A sense of dread came over Eunhyuk as he waited for his friend to catch his breath before continuing.

“Eeteuk bumped into one of those Geosang High basketball players, and they were arguing and now Kangin’s fighting with them! Come on!”

Shindong dragged Eunhyuk along, who barely had a second to explain anything to Junsu and Donghae, who hadn’t really heard what was happening, and simply waved goodbye to the two judo members who ran off.

“What was that all about?” Junsu asked Donghae, who frowned slightly as he tried to comprehend Shindong’s hurried words.

“I think Kangin-sunbae is in some sort of trouble and they’ve gone to help him.”

“Oh.” Junsu nodded as if he understood, but realised he didn’t recognise the name. “Who’s Kangin?”

“He’s their judo club captain.” Donghae supplied helpfully, at which point Junsu looked confused.

“You mean Hyuk’s in the judo club?” Donghae nodded, wondering why Junsu sounded so surprised. Surely if Junsu was Eunhyuk’s best friend he ought to know such things.

“But I thought he was in your dance group.”

“Nah, we asked him to help us dance because one of our original dancers hurt her leg and couldn’t perform for today.” Junsu looked shocked, and Donghae hoped he hadn’t offended him. “Don’t get me wrong, he’s surprisingly good for a beginner. But yeah, he wasn’t in our group - I’m pretty sure he’s been in the judo club since coming to this school.”

Junsu’s mind was reeling from the surprise, because he’d always just assumed that Hyukjae had joined a dance club ever since they’d gone to high school. He hadn’t even learnt any form of self defence when they were younger.

Donghae tried to change the subject. “Anyway, he’s a nice guy. We normally walk home together after practice, so we’ve talked a lot, and he’s mentioned you lots of times. He normally refers to you as his ‘annoying best friend’.”

Junsu smiled, resolving to ask Hyukjae about it later. “Yeah, that’s me. Wait, so your home is close to his? Which road do you live on?”

“Pureun Bada Street. I’m not sure if you know where that is though.”

Junsu’s eyes brightened. “Oh, I know where that is - Hyukjae and I used to live near there as neighbours when we were younger. But…” He trailed off, and Donghae looked at him curiously. “We both moved house during middle school, which is why we didn’t go to the same high school. He doesn’t live in that district anymore.”

Seeing Donghae’s confusion, Junsu shrugged nonchalantly. “You probably misheard him when saying that he used to live near where you do.”

Donghae nodded listlessly. Eunhyuk had some explaining to do.

--

“What is going on here?” Siwon’s stern voice cut through the chaos and they all stopped to stare at him, reminiscent of the principal at his angriest.

“He started it!” One of the Geosang boys pointed at Eeteuk, and Kangin bristled visibly, barely kept from lunging at him by Shindong and Eunhyuk both pinning his arms to the side.

“What the hell? Take that back, you son of a-”

“Silence!” Siwon raised his voice even louder, and looked around the crowd for a reliable witness. “What happened here exactly?”

A thin freshman standing behind one of the stalls raised his hand, and Siwon nodded at him. “Er, it started when he-” He gestured at Panda, “bumped into that boy-” he pointed at the irate basketball player, “and he got angry and started yelling at him. Then he threw a basketball at him, and that guy got mad and started fighting with him, and then the rest of them joined in.”

Siwon was about to speak when he noticed that Hankyung had quietly made his way through the crowd and was now staring at his team in annoyance. “I suggest you apologise to that student now, Jaeyong.”

“You’re kidding, right?” The boy looked betrayed as his captain folded his arms, allowing no further discussion on the matter.

“Fine. I apologise.” He said stiffly, bowing his head slightly towards Eeteuk, who nodded hurriedly while tapping Kangin on the shoulder and inclined his head towards the boy.

Kangin scowled but faced the other boy and bowed his head as well. “I’m sorry for fighting with you.” Siwon looked mildly surprised at Kangin’s apology, having assumed that Kangin wasn’t the type to give in so easily.

Then an announcement was made over the speakers, informing all the basketball teams to meet at the courts for the start of the semi-finals. Even as the players left and the crowd was dispersing, Eunhyuk was staring at Kangin, wondering since when his captain had become so gracious. He looked at Kangin and Eeteuk laughing over something and smiled to himself.

A/N: so this is the day the story will culminate to - the school festival cum basketball competition. it therefore will have many chapters dedicated to it :)
