A/N: This was the first fic I ever wrote, and it's based on my actual observations of a OB/GYN clinic in a hospital medical centre, so hopefully it's pretty accurate.

And so Suyin is resolved. I apologise for this chapter being so short!

Chapter 13

Stephanie stared at the envelope presented to her, and raised her head to give Yoochun a confused look. “What’s this, Dr. Park?”

He raised an eyebrow. “You know, if there aren’t any patients around, you could just call me Micky like you used to.”

She huffed at him and took the white envelope from his outstretched hand. “Well, what is this for? Surely you wouldn’t write me a letter and deliver it personally if it wasn’t important. I actually can’t believe you’d bother to write one at all, Micky.”

He looked injured, and pouted at her. “Are you suggesting that I’m too lazy to bother penning a letter to my good friend? I’m hurt. Anyway, just read it, okay?” She nodded, and he beamed at her. “Er, you could think of it as doing me a big favour. I’ll owe you for it.”

“I ought to get that in writing.” She mused to herself, and he laughed.

“By the way, where is Yunho?”

Stephanie rolled her eyes. “I guess it was too much to expect that you only came down here to talk to me.” Before he could protest, she continued. “He’s doing his hospital rounds again because there’s no one scheduled for appointments now, and we close for lunch right after. If it’s urgent you could just call him.”

Yoochun looked at his watch and sighed. “I can’t, I’ve got to be getting back now. I guess I’ll try to catch him later when he finishes.”

Stephanie shrugged. “Suit yourself. Come back at 5 and he should be done by then.”

Then he opened his mouth as if to ask something, but hesitated, and she noticed it. “What is it now? You might as well ask whatever’s on your mind.” Yoochun looked strangely uncomfortable, and Stephanie wondered what on earth he wanted to ask.

“I…heard about you and Yunho…”

Her eyes widened in understanding, and she looked a little ticked off, presumably annoyed at how nothing in this medical centre could be kept secret.

“…and I just wanted to make sure everything was fine between you two, you know, because you’re both my good friends and I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen.” He finished in one breath, eager to get the awkward sentence out.

Stephanie smiled and shook her head in fond exasperation. “You’re such a nosy person, you know that?” He had the decency to look apologetic, and she took pity on him. “We’re fine, Micky. We just discussed it like mature adults, and came to a common understanding.” He sighed in relief, patting her on the shoulder before turning to leave.

As Yunho returned to the clinic, he saw Stephanie with a piece of paper in her hands, seemingly engrossed in it. He went closer to the counter, and identified that it was handwritten in English. He cleared his throat, but she didn’t seem to hear him. He coughed a little louder, and she whipped around to see him standing there, a hand automatically folding the letter.

“Did any of the patients come and ask for an appointment?”

Stephanie quickly returned to work-mode, and indicated at the computer screen. “One patient came in almost just after you left, so I told her to return after the lunch hour.” He nodded and strode back into the consultation room, forgetting about the letter in her hand.

“You can’t leave, Liyin-ssi, I need you!” Junsu shook his head in exasperation. No, I don’t want to come off as utterly desperate. How am I supposed to start this conversation?

“Liyin-ssi, I heard that you’re looking for another job. Why would you? Don’t I mean anything to you?” He winced even as he imagined it. With that tone, she’d probably be intimidated and run off to actually sign up for that job. After labelling him as a complete nutcase, that is.

“Dr Kim?” A gentle knock on the door startled him out of his reverie, and he saw her enter the room.

“Ah, Liyin-ssi. Have Yoojin-ssi and Tiffany gone home already?”

Liyin nodded, smiling at how dazed he seemed to be. Really, he could be so cute sometimes. Then she blinked. Where did that thought come from? Stop acting like a love-struck girl, Liyin.

“Oh, okay. Er, actually there’s something I wanted to talk to you about, if you don’t mind.” Liyin was surprised at his serious tone and sat down slowly on one of the chairs, wondering what was wrong.

Junsu took a deep breath. “Firstly, erm, you know that I really appreciate everything you do for the clinic, right?”

She looked even more confused, and nodded hesitantly. “Thanks, Dr Kim.”

His expression eased up just a little bit. “And I really value you as a nurse. I mean, you’re the best nurse I’ve ever worked with. Honestly!”

Now Liyin was starting to see where this was going. Is he trying to say we should just keep our relationship a professional one? She tried to hide her disappointment, as he continued rambling on about how great her work ethic and skills were.

“…I mean, the patients all love you! They usually can’t understand where I found such a wonderful nurse.”

She looked up at him “Thank you.” Can’t you think of anything else to say? She clenched and unclenched her fist, loosening the tension in her hand.

“I hope I haven’t given you the wrong impression all this while…” That I didn’t appreciate always having you around, he thought to himself.

Her face fell a little at his words. Maybe I imagined It all. Maybe there never was anything between us to begin with. I feel so stupid!

Junsu looked at her face, and grew more anxious as her expression didn’t look reassuring. “And so I hope you’ll reconsider changing your job, and- and stay here.”

Wait. What? Her head whipped up so fast her hair went flying. “Excuse me, what?” She got the feeling something was amiss here. Since when had she talked about resigning when she loved her job, loved seeing him here every day, being in the same room with him?

“I heard that you were thinking of working in the hospital, and I really want you to stay with us… with me at this clinic. I- we need you!”

She just gave him a puzzled look, brows knitted together in confusion. “But I wasn’t.”

“What?”

“I never said I wanted to work at the hospital - I’ve never even thought about it before. Why would you think that I’d want to leave my job here?” Liyin started mentally reviewing the past few weeks, wondering if she’d somehow given him the impression that she wasn’t happy working here.

“But Changmin said…” Junsu paused as it started to click in place. “He lied to me!” Seeing how she obviously didn’t understand a word he was saying, he felt obligated to explain.

“Changmin told me he’d heard that you were considering working at the hospital. That idiot just wanted me to tell you that I-” He quickly stopped himself from continuing before he blurted the last part out.

Liyin looked at him expectantly, not daring to allow the tiny bubble of hope within her to grow. “He wanted you to tell me that you…?”

Junsu swallowed hard, cursing himself for speaking too quickly, but now she was waiting for an answer from him.

“That…I like you.” There, he’d said it, and there was no taking it back, even if she laughed at him and threw it back in his face. Her eyes widened, and for a moment she thought she’d imagined the words that came out of his mouth.

“I don’t know when, and I don’t know how, but I found myself looking forward to coming to the clinic every day just so that I’d get to see you.” Her breath caught in her throat, that tiny bubble of hope growing exponentially now.

“And then when I go home, I thank God for the day he put you here in my life. The thought of not having you here anymore…” His voice trembled, threatening to crack as he got off his chair and knelt down in front of her as she looked down at him.

Liyin felt tears forming in her eyes, and quickly swiped them away. “I- I like you too, Dr Kim.” She broke into a happy smile, sniffing at the same time. “I thought maybe it was too much to expect you to feel anything for me, that I was just imagining everything…”

He clasped her small hands in his own firmly. “Would you…” He drew nearer to her, and she leant forward. “…be my girlfriend?” She nodded wordlessly, eyes fluttering shut as he moved closer and touched his lips to hers.

eurgh. the ending was bad. I'm always horrible at writing this part of the story. for those wondering about Yunjae, they'll be in the last chapter, and there'll be an epilogue a bit later. all criticism/comments are highly appreciated!
