This piece is just one scene from a larger piece of work that I'm slowly plugging away at.

A single moment can hold a thousand memories.

The airport was crowded when I arrived and I struggled to keep my hands close. One brush with a single stranger would send my mind reeling with visuals of all their memories, even the ones they have forgotten. No memory is safe from my abilities.

The crowd bustled through the airport with individuals breaking off for different counters. I picked my ticket up in advance, so I followed the crowd to the metal detector and waited my turn to be scanned by the machine. I came through clean and headed for the terminal with my only piece of luggage, a single silver carry on. Possessions hold memories too and I was trying to leave as many behind as possible.

A hurried man rushed past me, knocking into my shoulder. I struggled to regain my balance as images played in fast forward through my head: his first steps, an elementary fight, his high school graduation, marriage, and two births. My feet fell beneath me and my head sank into my lap under the weight of another’s memories.

I sat in the middle of the airport for two minutes before regaining my posture. People stared, but only one offered his hand. I politely refused, knowing better. I hugged my arms close after standing up and continued towards my destination, avoiding contact with others. I clutched my ticket firmly in my left hand.

I made it to the terminal just in time to hear my first class seat to China called to board. First class was usually the safest place to avoid contact because of its spacious design. I settled into my seat and hoped for a good flight. Travel was never easy for me, but this trip was a necessity in order to gather knowledge from an elder memory keeper.

To pass the time, I played the memories of the stranger in my head. I watched him grow up. I experienced his happy moments and his sad moments with him. The milestones of a stranger’s life all played out in my head. I fast forwarded through the boring parts and slowed the interesting scenes. There was more than enough memories tucked away in my head to sustain me during the long flight.
