"At least they’re starting off as friends," Sam remarks casually, the first time Zander comes over for dinner. Stevie drops her fork into spaghetti in shock and shoots a slightly panicked look at her dad.
“We were friends by sophomore year, too,” Freddie points out, either ignoring or not noticing his daughter’s distress.
“No, I was your friend. You were just still that nub I put up with.”
“And that you kissed,” he reminds her.
Sam rolls her eyes and turns her attention to her daughter. “You haven’t kissed him yet, have you?” she asks. Next to Stevie, Zander starts coughing wildly, apparently having choked on a mouthful of garlic bread. Stevie pushes back her chair and jumps to her feet.
“WE’RE GETTING SMOOTHIES,” she declares loudly, willing the flush to leave her cheeks, grabbing Zander by the back of his shirt and dragging him out the door. He attempts to sputter a goodbye to Stevie’s parents as he clears his windpipe.
