I learned about the Sudbury School a couple years ago, from an article in "Psychology Today." It instantly answered my question about why I was so reluctant to go back to teaching. I'm not interested in keeping students locked up against their will and their better judgment, and tell them it's for their own good that they memorize information that is of no use or interest to them and that they'll forget days, weeks, months later. I don't like doing it, and I'm terrible at it. At the same time, I really like kids, and I like my subject matter (languages). Leaving teaching was bittersweet.
Well, if I ever taught again, or became involved in a school, it would be at a Sudbury school.
Here's a (somewhat lengthy) article that sums the system and the philosophy up nicely.
There are Sudbury schools all over the country, even in Seattle: the
Clearwater school (my friend Zina's daughter goes there).
Just spreading the word... :-)
