So, I am so excited, I just have to share this with everyone.  If you've followed my work at all, you probably have some idea that in my various universes, I always write Jack as being half-Indian, having once been named 'Jahangir Ranjit Pakshi', and as having a sister, Saraswati.

And so I've written and written with these two living in my head, ( Read more... )

Thanks so much for the links! I've bookmarked them, and will definitely take a look at them soon. :)

"Just for curiosity, are you Indian yourself?"
----Actually, I am half-Sri Lankan and half-Hungarian. My dad was born and raised in the Jaffna area of Sri Lankan, and he came to the USA in the '70's, after teaching in Sierra Leone and studying in Englad during the late 60's. My mom is actually first generation Hungarian-American, having grown up in the States. Growing up, my best friends were Persian and Lebanese, and I'm basically an adopted member of their families - so I'm a sort of culturally eclectic.

Many of my father's experiences/idiosyncracies have informed my take on Jack, as I see in my father the product of the British colonial system - this sort of more British-than-British sense of self that is nonetheless informed and molded by experiences far removed from Western culture, a sort of double-edged defiance that is neither Western nor Eastern but rather an amalgamation of both.

Anyways, long answer to a short question. Sorry about that. ;)

What about yourself?

Fantastic, I can't wait to hear what you think ^_^

Wow, what an interesting heritage! Sri Lankan, huh? That is so cool! So have you ever lived in Sri Lanka?

Double-edged defiance - I like that!

No, I sadly don't have a drop of Indian blood in my body, I just have an extreme love for the culture. I took a class on the history of modern India in my senior year and fell head over heels with almost everything Indian. It was great getting to study the East India Trading Company and such, b/c I could relate that in my mind to POTC which was neat. I love the music, bollywood movies (Lagaan is my favorite), the clothes and of course, the food...*drool* ^_^ Its my dream to visit India some day soon *sigh*.

When I first started writing, I had this mental vision of Elizabeth walking through an Indian marketplace with kohl on her eyes and wrapped in a sari - that transpired into the fic, lol. I wrote Jack in as having an Indian background (that being his reason for leaving her in india) and speaking hindi - but I'll let you read it and find the rest out for yourself ;)
