The hospital food and television were terrible. Par for the course. So Jules had had plenty of time to think, and connect the dots.
In the present, that line started with the way her heart had sunk when the nurse called her “Ms. Callaghan”. At first she couldn’t explain it. But then - nothing better to do - she gave it some thought.
Remembered the times as a kid when she’d been forced to wear dresses, and how it felt like drag. Admitted that it still did.
Remembered her body developing into a stranger’s. Knew, still, that it wasn’t hers, didn’t match.
She’d buried it, hoping it would go away.
She should’ve known it would all come up again. Getting shot had made her realize: she was as mortal as everyone, and she didn’t want to leave a female corpse.
Somebody had to know. The team would understand, but first she had to tell someone.
And then Sam slipped into the room, and she knew it had to be him, because come whatever, Jules still loved him.
So he shifted anxiously in the hospital bed. Sam noticed. “What’s up?” he said with concern.
He swallowed, hoping Sam would still love him, too.
