The moment Castiel returns heaven, he feels something shift within him.
There is a darkness; a darkness he has not felt in two years. It is the absence of Dean Winchester.
The angels are in disarray and there are not many who will listen to him. Castiel begans working. He starts with the first sphere; the lower level angels. They are fast to oblige his orders. They remind him of himself, two years ago.

Raphael calls. But Castiel does not answer. He is not ready. Not yet.
Heaven has no such thing as time. It is not a concept familiar to most angels. Two years ago Castiel would be one of those angels. Now he is constantly reminded of the passage of time. His heart aches for every second that passes and he feels incomplete. Something is missing. He does not understand these feelings of longing, and then he remembers Dean Winchester. He remembers his characteristic hotheaded ways and he knows. He misses Dean; the one he gripped tight and raised from perdition. It is the one he made whole again, piece by piece. But how can he miss someone that was never his to begin with?

By the fourth day, Castiel has begun with the second sphere. Gainig their support is a difficult task. He realizes that he was wrong, maybe this isn’t what he’s meant to be doing.

Castiel talks to the second sphere. He tells them of the averted war, of the war they’ve known of, and then he tells them about God. The angels listen. He tells them of God’s miracles, of Castiel’s resurrection, of his new and improved powers. He tells them of Sam Winchester and his sacrfice. He feels multitudes of sadness wash over him. He goes on.

His brothers and sisters listen as he tells them of the bravery of Sam Winchester. But he does not tell them of Dean. He cannot.

Raphael calls. Castiel does not go. He is not ready.

The third sphere proves to be the easiest. A piece of pie, as Dean might say. There are only four archangels remaining; Raguel, Zerachiel, Remiel and Raphael. One display of his powers is enough to earn their respect, all but one. Raphael.

Castiel goes to Raphael. He listens.

Raphael has seen many things. He has seen what Lucifer has done, but he has also witnessed heaven’s work. Worse yet, was Michael’s spiral into madness. Raphael had cherished Michael above all angels but the Winchesters had changed his view of his brother and Raphael’s own beliefs. Along with his reaffirmation of God, Raphael’s faith had been restored.

On the seventh day of Castiel’s residence in Heaven, Raphael asks for forgiveness and Castiel is ready. With a quiet nod, Castiel frees Raphael’s soul from his torment.

His work here is nearly complete. He relays the angels. But this time he is not alone. Raphael stands beside him as the angels take their various stations; protecting humanity, watching, and more importantly, exercising that free will God gave them. Castiel thinks Dean would be proud.

Dean. Often Castiel is tempted to glimpse into Dean’s life. He doesn’t. He knows Dean will go to Lisa. He will form a family and he will be happy. Dean does not need Castiel in his life. Not anymore. The job is done. Apocalypse averted.

On the seventeenth day, Castiel visits John and Mary Winchester. They are young. They are beautiful and he is nothing but an intruder. He ignores the feeling of restlessness as he leaves them.
Raphael calls to Castiel. Castiel does not go. There is work to be done.

On the thirtieth day, Raphael comes to Castiel. To Castiel who is alone among them all. He does not need to speak. Castiel knows what he is here to say.

“There is work to be done,” Castiel says.

Raphael does not respond. He shows Castiel what Castiel has been unwilling to see. What he has been too afraid to see.

Dean is alone in what must be Lisa’s home. He is running a hand through his hair, then he is grabbing a duffel bag from the bed. It is still dark outside when Dean opens the door. The house’s inhabitants are oblivious to Dean’s actions. In seconds Dean is in the impala and leaving the house behind.
Dean is alone. He is in a motel room. The bed’s unmade and there are wrappers all over. His duffel bag is on the chair.

Dean is alone. He is outside a cemetary, with a shovel in one hand and a bag over his shoulder.
Dean is not alone. He is pinned to a wall by a vampire. Miracolously he manages to throw off the vampire. He’s moving fast, ax in hand and slicing through the air. Three tries and Dean does it. He stumbles into the car, blood spreading through his jacket.

Dean is alone, trapped in four white walls. His face is calm, eyes closed and mouth opened slightly. He’s never looked younger.

Castiel gasps. He doesn’t understand. He was wrong. There is space for Castiel in Dean’s life. Sam sacrificed himself to protect his brother. Castiel is not going to let Dean give it up.
Raphael glances at Castiel. “The work here is done.” Go.

Castiel nods. He will go to Dean Winchester and all will be right again.
Castiel is going to free his soul. Dean Winchester may not be his, but he is a part of who Castiel has become and maybe, they both need each other.
