Inside the caravan they rented, Date sat in the passenger’s seat as Nabe drove them to the beach. One of Mr. Children’s songs played on the radio and Nabe hummed along softly following a tip that Taiga told him to help practice his pitching if he wanted to be the group’s main vocalist. Somehow being less conscious of the words made it easier to focus on getting the pitch right.
Usually Date would've had a lot to say. He didn't talk much at work so he would be chatty after but today he was oddly quiet. A side glance at Date was enough to tell that the other was brimming with unasked questions. Nabe chuckled as he turned off the radio. He could already guess what’s on the other’s mind but he was happy for a chance to make conversation. “What’s wrong?” he asked, taking his eyes off the road for a few seconds to spare Date a glance.
“Hmm?” Date replied, breaking out of his thought spiral.
“You look like you have something you want to say,” Nabe elaborated, trying to draw the questions out into the open.
“Oh… It’s just… It’s not my birthday, you know? Or yours, or our anniversary, or the groups anniversary…” he trailed off trying to think of other events they celebrated together.
“You mean you don’t remember?” Nabe gasped, pulling a surprised face. “It’s exactly one year from- nah, I’m just kidding!” he laughed seeing the subtle ‘oh shit’ look on Date’s face. “You’re right, there’s no occasion.”
“Then why?”
The edges of Nabe’s lips tugged upwards into his trademark Cinnamoroll smile. “Because you look like you’re getting jealous,” he teased. “Ahh, it’s hard when your dear boyfriend is so popular.”
Date smiled. It was a rare sight, which made it all the more endearing and contagious. “You noticed that?” Date said, the slight lilt of happiness making it into his voice.
“Mmmhmm, so today, let me take care of you.”
