Wooh, I can get this one in before I go on hiatus. :)
An hour could be a long or a short time, depending on what was going on. During a concert, an hour would pass in a flash. When working or recording, time would just fly by but when one had to wait, time would be running slowly like thick honey.
School was the worst. Time seemed to become endless and pass so slowly, one could think it was going backwards instead of forward.
Yamashita rolled his shoulders. Yes, he knew school was necessary and everything but sometimes he couldn’t be bothered. Today was one of the days when he just couldn’t seem to like anything about class. The teacher was boring, what he was explaining was boring and his class was almost half-empty, people having to work and all that. Although attendance was mandatory, there were always exceptions, especially for young idols and actors like them. Yamashita had also missed a few hours of school here and there before.
When the bell rang and finally signalled lunch break, Yamashita slunk off to the cafeteria. He needed this much deserved break!
He stood in front of the food ticket vending machine and fumbled for coins when somebody offered him a couple. “If you don’t mind eating curry rice with nattou, have these. I got doubles for some reason.”
Looking at the person standing there, Yamashita recognized the guy to be from the class next door - the sports one. Kitayama or so. He’d seen the other during P.E. and some of the other mix and mingle classes they had. “Thanks. You sure you don’t want to keep them though?”
“Nah,” the other smiled. “They’re date stamped. And everyone else thinks nattou and curry rice is a gross combination.”
“I see nothing wrong with it,” Yamashita accepted the tickets and the two went to get food. “You’re in the class next door, right? From the soccer team. Kitayama-kun...?”
“Should I feel flattered that you know my name?” the other grinned. “Kitayama Hiromitsu. Nice to meet you, Yamashita-kun.”
“Well, I guess I don’t have to introduce myself anymore, huh?”
“Coincidence. My friend’s little sister actually likes you. She wants your number and asked me whether I’d get it for her,” Kitayama said while he accepted the curry rice and extra bowl of nattou from the cafeteria woman. “So, I have herewith done what she asked me to do.”
“Are you serious?” Yamashita sounded a little amused. He was also amused by the fact that Kitayama had just said it instead of beating around the bush.
Kitayama looked at the other. “Somewhat. I know it’s probably impossible though.”
Yamashita laughed softly. “Yeah it is.”
They parted ways after that short conversation. Yamashita found himself in a better mood than before when he sat down to eat curry rice with nattou (it became very popular at their school afterwards and people would remember it fondly as their year’s fad later on).
Two weeks later, Yamashita was being switched out of the basketball game during gym class and went to get something to drink at the sideline. He saw Kitayama and waved a short greeting at the other. When the other male jogged over to him, he blinked in surprise.
“Yo,” Kitayama greeted.
“Yo,” Yamashita replied.
“I got into Johnny’s,” Kitayama blurted out. “I don’t know how I did it.”
“Eh?” Yamashita blinked.
“Remember my friend’s sister? She sent in my application. Maybe she thinks that if I work in the same company as you, you’ll come and visit my place at some point and she can coincidentally be around at the same time,” Kitayama shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t even know how it worked out. This was the only Saturday in the whole year I didn’t have a soccer match or training on.”
Yamashita smiled, “Well, congratulations then?”
Smiling back, Kitayama replied, “Thanks. And well, let’s get along.”
