Words I Don't Remember by How to Dress Well.
The mirror is dark, here in the practice room with the lights off. Hoseok sits on the ground, feeling the ache in his muscles, arms and legs, fingers and the scratch along his shin where he caught the edge of a chair at lunch. Or was that supper? He's not sure anymore.
Dance, he thinks. You need to be perfect.
Here in the quiet, alone in the dark, he doesn't need to smile if he doesn't want to.
"How do you manage to smile all the time?" people asks him; they don't seem to understand that it's not that he's pretending. I just want to smile, he thinks, as he shrugs and says something that will make them laugh.
But sometimes he doesn't feel like smiling, sometimes he gets tired and he just. . .needs to turn off for a little bit. Sometimes his arms and legs ache and it's good to lie on the ground, spreading his arms and legs, extending his fingers to the edges of the room, tucked into the safety of the shadows.
Hoseok breathes, closes his eyes.
He wakes to the sound of the door swinging open; I feel asleep? he's thinking, startled, as the light from the hallway streams in to cast deeper shadows, as the silhouette of a head peers into the room.
"Hoseok?" Namjoon asks, though he's not asking if it's Hoseok in the room; he's just asking if Hoseok is okay.
"I'm here," Hoseok says, code for everything is cool. He stands, stretching, leaning to one side as the vertebrae of his neck crack softly, as he pulls the joy out of his chest and pours it out into a smile as he walks into the light. "Sorry, I must have fallen asleep." His grin is sheepish, as he passes Namjoon in the doorway, but Namjoon reaches out to ruffle his hair as he walks past.
"Go sleep in your bed, kid," Namjoon says, code for don't make me worry about you, and Hoseok nods, yawning. Namjoon swings one arm over his shoulder as they walk down the hallway.
