[Team Three] Untitled

So this is weird. Purely a result of the random instrumental Spotify playlists I was digging through in this afternoon. Wrote most of this on my phone so there may be mistakes, and I played around in past tense again for the first time in ages.

Once, Yabu thought about visiting him. Only once. It was after he’d taken a walk in town and had run into the same grey tabby-cat they had more than two years ago. Hikaru had immediately jumped behind Yabu, fingers digging into his shoulders as he whimpered. He’d laughed and imitated the cat’s meowing for a bit, but then Hikaru flinched away, and that’s when Yabu first learnt of Hikaru’s one true fear.

“Sorry. I won’t do it again.” When Hikaru continued to glare, Yabu sighed and held out his hand. “Let’s go. I’ll protect you.”

This time, Yabu was the one left shaking by the encounter as he quickly turned around, blindly making his way forward until he could physically go no further. Sinking onto a park bench Yabu buried his face in his hands, willing his body to stop trembling, his mind from opening the floodgates to his memories. Their memories.

It was no use.

Later, when he unfurled himself and slowly, shakily, stood up, he was struck so forcefully with the desire to visit it nearly knocked him right back onto the seat.

Only the memory of Hikaru’s determined face; the harshness of the request made long ago, stopped Yabu from turning on his heel right then and there.

"How long has it been?" Inoo asked softly, placing a bowl of freshly cooked rice in front of him. "About seven months?"

With the little energy he had, Yabu made his best attempts to nod. Seven months since Hikaru had made his decision, seven months since Yabu realised he didn't know anything about Hikaru at all.

Inoo was still watching him sympathetically, so Yabu tried to break the silence. "Yeah. I still don't understand why. It's been months and I still don't know." The last part came out as a growl and he slammed the table with his fist involuntarily, causing some soup to spill onto the table. "Ah, sorry."

"No matter," Inoo replied, swiftly grabbing some tissues to clean up the mess. He pushed the bowl of soup into Yabu's hands. "Drink before you spill even more."

Inoo stirred his own soup mindlessly with a chopstick, waiting until Yabu had obediently taken a few long sips before speaking again. "Have you considered that maybe he doesn't need you to understand?"

---

Chinen tried to cheer him up when Yabu popped in to say hello for the first time in a year, by informing him of the latest town gossip while he shined Yabu's shoes for free.

"On the house!" he grinned cheekily, waving away Yabu's usual protests with a flick of his cloth. "And perhaps another pair of shoes," he suggested, looking critically down at Yabu's feet. "I don't understand how you can walk out of your house with mismatched shoes."

Yabu knew Chinen meant well and just wanted someone to gossip with, so he sat down on the steps without another word. Without a doubt, Chinen already knew all about it, so at least he wouldn't have to repeat the story. Anyway, he couldn't deny that Chinen and his friendly chatter never failed to bring a smile to his face, and it wasn't everyone Chinen chose to associate with. "Hikaru used to check for me," he mumbles, feeling the all-too-familiar pang in his chest at the name. For the first time that day, Yabu looked at his shoes. "They don't look that bad, do they?"

"Oh Yabu, one is black and one is brown," Chinen sighed, his gaze was almost pitying. He knelt down. "Oh well. I guess this will be my duty for the time being.”
