~1300 words of kingdom hearts sora/riku (mostly background though) as they mediate a "small" disagreement between Komory bat and a Peepsta hoo. (Fwoof Fwoof the tiny baby komory bat is there too)
“Don't you think she's going to be upset?”
Sora’s voice was laced with worry. Riku looked out the window of their Twilight Town townhome to where Pence, Hayner, and Olette were setting up their camera equipment, Komory fluttering about excitedly. Xion and Roxas were convincing Fwoof Fwoof to wear a tiny pair of sunglasses Namine had crafted for him.
“I think Komory’s alright with it?”
Sora shook his head. “No…I mean Peepsta. I haven’t seen her since last night.”
“In fairness, dream eaters usually only come out at night.”
“You know what I mean.”
Yeah, Riku did. Dream Eaters had been becoming more and more present in the waking world. What started with occasional adorable appearances by Komory, Fwoof Fwoof, and Meow Wow grew into regular appearances by a flock of rainbow Tama Sheep roaming the hills in the Land of Departure, a herd of Pegaslick flying over Arendelle, and the odd Peepsta Hoo making a home in a neighborhood birdhouse.
This birdhouse in particular was in Sora and Riku’s backyard. birdhouse had been left behind by the previous owners when they bought the townhome. Originally housing a yearly nest of sunset sparrows that were native to Twilight Town, this year a Peepsta Hoo had made it her home. Riku had thought that the “doorway” of the birdhouse was too small for the larger bird, but he forgot to take into account dream eater physics and teleportation.
(Dream eaters were all very much a “if I fits I sits” type of creature)
“Where did Komory even learn to play Flick Rush poker?”
Riku shrugged. “She’s… persistent when she wants something.”
“Gosh, I wonder where she got that from.”
“Hey…” Riku grumbled, wrapping his arms around Sora’s waist before resting his chin on the top of Sora’s head. “I’m more surprised that the Twilight Town dreameaters apparently have a high stakes poker game on Saturday nights.”
This past weekend they had been woken up by the Komory’s chitters and the Peepsta Hoo’s frantic hoots. Sora and Riku had both run outside at 3 am, the ever present sunset only slightly dimmed at the early hour. Sora had grabbed Peepsta Hoo to comfort her, while Riku gently stroked Komory’s puffed up fur. In the birdhouse, they could make out Fwoof Fwoofs excited squeeps.
Once both creatures had calmed down, Sora made the mistake of asking the question.
“What’s going on?!”
That started a whole new round of screeching and hooting before Peepsta Hoo flew off and Komory teleported out of Riku’s arms. There was a moment of momentary panic before they could hear Komory’s quiet “cree” coming from the birdhouse.
It was too early to deal with whatever that was, so Riku and Sora returned to bed, deciding to settle the housing dispute later.
“I was wondering where she was going at night.” Sora mumbled, still looking out the window where Komory was flying around her new house.
Riku chuckled, kissing the top of brown spikes. Outside, Hayner was standing in front of the birdhouse gesturing at Fwoof Fwoof who was hanging upside down from the roofline. Pence was filming while Olette ran around adjusting the lighting. Pence had explained it was part of their school project- filming a documentary of the local dreameaters in Twilight Town. Riku just hoped Fwoof Fwoof didn’t puff up too big at his star treatment. The tiny sunglasses were pretty cute though.
“C’mon, lets go out there to supervise.” Sora laughed as he opened the back door.
“Cut!” Pence yelled, looking over at Sora and Riku. “Hey guys. Good thing you’re here. We’re having trouble getting Fwoof Fwoof to say his line.”
Riku’s brow furrowed. “What’s his line?”
On cue, Fwoof Fwoof let out a “squeep!”
“Ok good Fwoof Fwoof,” Olette encouraged. “Now just, do that on cue.”
“You can do this Fwoof Fwoof!” Xion cheered.
“Squeep!” Fwoof Fwoof shook his body, his glasses nearly falling off. Hayner reached out to help him adjust the sunglasses.
“And… action!” Pence called.
Hayner grinned at the camera. “Hey Twilight Town peeps! We’re here with our local adorable celebrity, Fwoof Fwoof!”
There was a momentary pause before Fwoof Fwoof let out the smallest, shyest “squeep?”
Sora turned to buy his face in Riku’s bicep to hide his laughter. Who knew their Fwoof Fwoof would be camera shy? He loved it when Sora took pictures of him.
Hayner took the sound in stride, and continued on. “We’re here to introduce you to some of the creatures that may be taking residence in your birdhouses this year! Fwoof Fwoof is a tiny version of a Komory Bat. Komory here is a fully size version- still adorable though!”
Komory preened, turning flips in excitement as she soared through the air.
“Now, most dreameaters are pretty safe, such as Komory and Fwoof Fwoof here, but some can be a little more territorial and-”
Hayner’s explanation was cut off by a loud, indignant “Hoot!”
Riku looked up, “Incoming!”
Sora summoned his keyblade on instinct as a blur of lavender purple streaked down from the sky, headed straight towards Komory.
Between one blink and the next, Sora had teleported in front of Komory blocking the attack.
Riku stepped foward as well, carefully but firmly grabbing the flapping, angry wings of their errant Peepsta Hoo.
Peepsta hooted in indignation, her head swiveling around to peck at Riku’s fingers. Riku flinched, nearly letting go. “Stop that!”
“Hoot!”
“No, you can’t go attack Komory. You have to calm down.”
“Hoot! Hooooot!”
Komory chittered from behind Sora. Fwoof Fwoof fluttered nervously by the birdhouse.
Riku took a deep breath. “Ok. I guess we’re doing this now. Komory, you can’t kick people out of their homes.”
Komory chittered.
“Even if you win them in a card game. Which you should not be playing. We gotta talk about that later too.”
Komory grumbled and Riku turned his attention to Peepsta. “And you. No fighting your fellow dreameaters. We’re a team now. If you have a problem, you come tell me or Sora. Or even Roxas and Xion. We’ll help you get it sorted.”
Peepsta let out a quiet hoot in response, finally stopping her assault on Riku’s fingers.
“... And that folks is the rarest dreameater of all: Riku Keyblade Master. He can understand the dreameaters strange sounds! He’s one of a kind and also very cute. But he’s also taken.” Hayner winked at the camera while Riku let out a deep sigh.
“Very taken,” Sora said, leaning up to kiss Riku’s cheek before returning his keyblade to the pocket dimension it lived in when not in use. “Now, c’mon. Let’s get this settled. Can you guys, uh, timeshare the birdhouse?”
There was a flutter of hoots and chitters. Riku shook his head. “Nope.”
Sora hummed, trying to think it over.
“Oh!” Xion let out a little cheer. “Wait! I’ve got an idea. Roxas and I still need to do our summer project. What if we make more birdhouses for the dreameaters? It’ll help the sunset sparrows out too.”
“Xion… we don’t even know how to build a birdhouse.”
“We’ll ask Lea. I’m sure he’ll know!”
Riku wasn’t entirely sure that was a good idea.
“That’s a great idea!” Sora exclaimed. “Can Peepsta here get the first birdhouse in production?”
“Of course!” Xion reached out to gently pet Peepsta’s feathers. “We’ll even make it bigger so you’ll be more comfortable.
Peepsta hooted out an approval, and Riku felt that she had calmed down enough to let go. Peepsta flew over to Xion, settling on her shoulder.
“I know,” ‘Xion said soothingly to Peepsta’s hoots. “We’ll make it super pretty too!”
“Welp, sounds like that solves that,” Sora said, a grin on his face.
“You know Pence, maybe after this dreameater documentary we can pitch a new show,” Hayner grinned. “Desperate Dreameaters of Twilight Town! It’ll be a hit!”
@nichi, I'll tag you on discord. your line is "It'll be a hit!"
