[Team Four] The Diner

Mar 16, 2022 13:12

This is something I started while watching Shameless, but I have no idea where I'm going with it.

"Anyway-" Yoongi says after seconds of deafening silence, looking up at the customer on the other side of the register, who looks back at Yoongi with the widest eyes Yoongi has seen at seven in the morning. "Would you like the receipt?"

The customer still looks at him like a deer in headlights. Yoongi tries to smile back in a calm and polite manner but by the look on the customer's face, it's not helping. There's no one in line behind him, so Yoongi can't really tell him to move, but he has tables to clean and coffee to make.

Another crash comes from somewhere behind Yoongi, the same familiar sound of porcelain making acquaintances with the linoleum floor of the kitchen. The customers seem to come to his senses, then, grabbing the tray in front of him, scurrying off to a booth in the far right corner, by the window.

Yoongi rolls his eyes, but not before he has turned his back to the seating area.

"What the fuck are you doing in there?" Yoongi hisses through clenched teeth, looking through the pass and into the kitchen. As he had expected, there are broken white plates all over the floor. Jungkook, one of their dishwashers, is on his knees in the middle of the mess while Jimin, a server, stands by the sink, both his tiny hands covering his mouth.

"It was an accident, hyung," Jungkook splutters, face beet red as he scrambles onto his feet. Yoongi looks back over at Jimin, who looks equally flustered.

"What happened?" Yoongi asks, eyes narrowing as he takes in Jimin's surprisingly ruffled appearance. Jimin's usually coiffed blond hair is mussed, his shirt is unbuttoned halfway, his apron untied and on the floor. Jungkook looks equally ruffled, but that could just be Jungkook waking up ten minutes before he was supposed to be at work, dashing out of the door without running a comb through his hair.

"Jungkook lost his balance and fell onto the stack of dirty dishes," Jimin murmurs, avoiding Yoongi's gaze.

"I bet that's what happened," Yoongi mutters, but doesn't find it in himself to get worked up at this hour. Sighing, he tells them both to clean up and get their fucking shit together, before he turns his back upon them.

The diner is quiet as it usually is at this hour. Besides a couple of people popping in to buy coffee and a pastry to go, Yoongi counts only three people actually seated and eating. They're usually short-staffed during the early mornings. Yoongi started at four, while Jimin and Jungkook started at six. Namjoon was supposed to come in at seven-thirty - Yoongi looks at the clock on the wall that informs him that it's seven forty-five - but hasn't shown up yet.

Yoongi would be worried, had he not known Namjoon for more than half his life and that Namjoon is chronically late to everything. To be honest, Yoongi would be more surprised if Namjoon was on time for once.

After Yoongi has cleaned three tables and served six more cups of coffee, Namjoon dives through the front door.
