Is there any actual plot to my neverending angstshipping fic? Who knows? Not me, that's for sure!
Yu-gi-oh, g-rated, pretty short
"He was eternally grateful."
Malik watches Honda's face twist into one of amused skepticism. "I somehow doubt those were Kaiba's exact words."
"I mean, of course not," Jou admits, scratching his face a bit sheepishly. "But that's definitely what he meant."
"I think your translation of 'get out of my office' could use some work," Yugi adds with a laugh.
Jou crosses his arms, fully committed to his version of the story. "Mr. Money-pants didn't even get security to throw us out this time. I think that counts for something."
Malik listens to the conversation with a half-smile on his face, watching Jou and Yugi continue to recount the last time they'd spoken to Kaiba. Jou's embellishments are pretty entertaining, and Malik is sure Ryou will regret missing this story. Hopefully, he'll arrive soon enough that they'll tell it again.
"His excuse about being too busy to duel me because he has a company to run is so lame," Jou continues. "I mean, that's what all the employees are for, right? To run the company."
"Well, speaking from experience, somebody has to tell all the minions what to do," Malik chimes in with a dark chuckle.
The three of his friends grow silent for a moment, temporarily confused until the statement sinks in.
"Malik, are you making a joke about the time you ran a shady underground global crime syndicate?" Jou asks.
"...is that not allowed?" he replies, suddenly wondering if he's overstepped. They probably don't like being reminded of all the shit he did to them during Battle City.
Honda breaks the silence with a muffled snort. "Actually, it's pretty funny," he grins. "You know, 'cause of the Millennium Rod you had? You really did just tell everyone what to do."
The tense moment shatters as they all start to laugh.
"Man, our lives have been so weird," Jou says.
"Isn't that the truth," Malik replies, relaxing a bit. He's constantly astounded by how forgiving Yugi and his friends can be, how they manage to stay so positive all the time.
"Did I miss something important?"
They turn to see that Ryou has finally arrived, glancing at them curiously as he grabs a seat at the table.
"Just catching up," Yugi answers. "Glad you could make it. Is everything okay?"
It's unusual for Ryou to be late to one of the group's lunches. And as he settles down, Malik notices that he looks a bit more harried than usual. Like he didn't have time earlier to straighten out the wrinkles in his shirt or tame his unruly hair into something a little less wild.
"Everything's fine," Ryou says, brushing off the concern. "My father is home briefly, so I was dealing with that."
He announces this in his usual, light tone, but there's a sort of pinched look to his face as he speaks. Just barely slipping through his mask of pleasantries.
Malik notices that the relaxed feeling at the table has tensed up a bit, like there's some unspoken meaning to Ryou's explanation. But Malik isnt privy to it, and doesn't understand the split-second glances the other boys exchange.
"No worries," Yugi says, putting a genuine smile back on his face.
"Yeah," Jou chimes in. "I've got a story to tell you" and then he starts rehashing the Kaiba encounter all over again from the beginning.
Malik listens quietly as he continues to eat, but his thoughts keep straying back to Ryou's arrival. It occurs to him that he doesn't know anything about Ryou's family. Parents? Siblings? He's never mentioned anyone before.
Malik is curious, but it doesn't feel like the sort of thing he should ask about. Better to let that story unveil itself another time.
