“Wow, that’s pretty, Sunshine,” a sarcastic voice drawled.

I glance up surprised by the interruption to see Danny James strolling across the grass towards me. I sighed, not really surprised by his presence. I didn’t know Danny very well; we went to the same school but didn’t have any classes together. He was just that elusive enigma that I saw around school from time to time.

He looked familiar, but in a town this small everyone looked vaguely familiar. I watched curiously as he shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his jeans and asked. “You here for Community Service?”

“Unfortunately,” I replied. I flicked a piece of green chalk at him and he caught it on reflex. “You’re early but you’re welcome to join me.”

He pocketed the chalk. “No thanks.”

I shrugged and returned to the piece of poetry I was inscribing into the sidewalk.
