Dialogue

Mods, if I'm barking up the wrong tree, just delete.

I've got a problem regarding dialogue punctuation (which myself and three betas have all missed whilst tearing apart my work). What do you do when you need (or just want) to split two sentences with a dialogue tag, but they aren't different enough to warrant a new paragraph?

Is it imperative to have the action of the shurg before the next part of the dialogue? It seems fine the way you've got it. If you want to not break it up so much, you could move the action to the beginning or the end of the woman's thoughts.

*shrug*

It isn't imperative, but I'd really like to keep the shrug. If it looks okay then that's fine. Thank you.

The example you listed looks fine to me (I've used that format myself).

That's what I thought, but I've been catching some flak for that style.

(This post is completely fine, by the way.)

The example you have is correct, in my opinion. Normally the speaker/subject wouldn't be capitalized after the first sentence like that. New sentences always require a capital letter, so just ignore the people telling you off for that. I write like that all the time. XD
