Forethought
by Arithanas
For a recent widow, Rose gave the impression of coping very well. Too well, someone dare to whispered behind her back. For hours on end, she remained silent, still, without a tear in her eye. As she stood at the foot of the grave of her beloved husband a week before. That was her state of mind since receiving the news of Robert’s death in that unusual accident.

This was unsettling, to say the least, for everyone who had known her before. Everyone knew her devotion to her husband, which was completely reciprocal and almost as deep and committed. They had no children, but they do not care. At times, it seemed that in their world there were only two people: Rose and Robert. They were happy living that way, without causing trouble; both of them immersed in their marital bliss.

His sudden death in a work accident caused concern among the acquaintances of the couple. Everyone expected Rose to collapse in tears, those with vivid imagination imagine her trying to commit suicide, that did not happen.

She surprised them with her strength and temper, always smiling to the condolences, thanking for the visits...

She never shed a tear.

There was a reason for all this calm. Unbeknown to her family, her friends, even to Robert himself, Rose had made arrangements for this little contingency long time ago. She only had to wait for the bokor do his job, so she harnessed her patience. She only had to wait for a phone call, then she could do her bags and start again somewhere else.

Everything would be as if this nightmare never happened. Robert would be with her all the time, waiting on her hand and foot, tender and dedicated as usual. It would be better than before, because he would not have to leave for work. His pension was enough for Rose to live with all the comforts and he no longer need something. In a new place, where nobody knew them, she might say that Robert had suffered a stroke, that would justify his stiff movements, his lack of speech. Also this would prevent people from asking, given how rude it is to intrude on people's health.

She was just a phone call away from this happiness, there was no reason for despair.
