I’m afraid of the light, they said.

He was a child of the military institution, a student of precision and ceremony, a man linked with his title linked with his place in the grand obsidian scheme, steel over energy and storm. He was sworn to defend, to serve what was regimented and what was familiar and what had been driven into him from day one, deception and family, clever occupation and fear of the unknown. And they were the unknown.

Look at the light, they said.

He’d tried, early on, when he’d been working to occupy and serve and had found them lacking in complexity and in subtlety and in layers of any kind. They wore their hearts on their homespun sleeves along with their religion. Even their resistance worked with appalling visible soul. Yuck.

At least initially. When he’d bothered to look again their fire struck a chord rather than a nerve, candor versus cloak and dagger even more of a glaring contrast against his own life, his own place, his own well-learned training. And he was drawn, a Terran moth in Cardasi skin fluttering under a veil of familiar secrecy toward an alluring Bajoran flame.

Move toward the light, they said.

Candor, reform, planetwide liberation. A legend. A price on his head. Betrayal.

And her.

Try not to look at the light, they said.

But he couldn’t help it. It was so beautiful.
