Okay -- I'm not normally a memer, but I thought
this one from
jaylakewas pretty fun. You're supposed to grab a book, turn to page 123, and blog the fifth sentence. Jay Lake grabbed any book that was not one of his, but I think it's more fun to do my own, so here they are:
Book One: "As she closed her eyes, the sounds around her intensified."
YA: "And why?" (which isn't really a sentence, but a fragment, followed by another fragment: "But there were more important, more immediate considerations.")
The as-yet unfinished Book Two only has 120 pages (though I was surprised to have that much done), so sentence 5 of p. 120 is: "And what if such a force should set its sights on Si'vad, with one less ally sending ships and soldiers to fortify her borders?"
Apparently the lesson I will take from this little exercise is that I start too many sentences with "But" and "And." Also? All of these sentences appear in passages with action and good tension. So by page 123, the story is well under way.
Good exercise, lots of fun! So what's on your page 123?
