Name: Yvain.
Age: As young as I feel? So either 6 or 60 then.
Location: London, UK (Best City in the World! Until the next time I move).

About me:

I'm a Londoner in my late 20s who used to write... and I want to change that description to a Londoner in her late 20s who *does* write and hopefully who writes well. Getting involved in this community is one of the ways I'm trying to do that.

I write poetry and usually that's what I'm happiest with. However, my whole life I've wanted to write good fiction so that's what I'm going to try and focus on. I read a lot of variety but the ideas for stories that I get tend to be fantasy (particularly urban fantasy)and science fiction.

In the rest of my life, I've just brought a house with my partner although to my mind we won't have made it a home until we've got a cat to run around it. I'm a social worker which means constantly failing and stressed but, on the other hand, I'm a social worker which means occasionally I make a positive difference. Work has also allowed me to make some amazing friends and have some amazing experiences - so it's worth it today at least. But sometimes I do need to escape it and I'm finding writing an excellent way of doing that...

I love to read and watch films. Basically I want the world to tell me a story at every opportunity.

My writing
My writing history: I would say that I've always written... but then nearly 5 years went by and all I'd written was a few poems on scraps of paper. Whilst I wouldn't say I've exactly been wasting my time during that period, I did miss creating something. So this is a new start for me.

I used to write Buffy/Angel fanfic - which was practically compulsory for my friends at Uni (yup, I got old) - but rarely anything I felt good enough about to post online. Putting stuff out there is also a new resolution!

My current writing project is... Ummm... there's three of them right now...

The first is my fantasybigbang project which is provisionally entitled 'The Iago Descent'. It's about a fae and an odd bit of germanic folklore which peaked my interest. It's also turning out to be a little bit about a tiny village in Western England and a bored waitress whose friend gets murdered. I'm currently 5,019/10,000 and have a beginning and an end but am beginning to panic about the middle!

The second is a story called 'Cully' which is a short story based on 'Sybil' which was a case of multiple personality disorder... except the story probably has a demon in it so I doubt that it will be of much interest to students of psychology as a study.

The next one is without a title but has ZOMBIES! and is based off last week's prompt. It's the least developed but now I want to write it all the time... which is bad as I should be concentrating on 'Iago".

Other stuff I write: Hoping to get started with some Sherlock fanfic.
And I have many self-indulgent poems to inflict on the world one day.

Inspirations: Gaiman is God. His short stories are amazing (as well as everything else but it's Fragile Things I'm reading right now)

I love the Handmaid's Tale, The Secret History, Discworld...

Phillipa Greggory's books are a current favourite,

loved Sybil,

the Daizel and Pascoe novels are fun and a good lesson on building a world of supporting characters...

U. A. Fanthorpe's poems should be compulsory reading as should Carol Ann Duffy's (particularly The World's Wife).

Cthulu, Cthulu, Cthulu...

I don't/can't write... Sex! I just can't do it. My mother appears over my shoulder and starts to comment... Now, I'm pretty sure she'd be very supportive but then she's joined by my Aunt Alison and they're cackling and it's too much... Also I'm no good at it. The Writing of it.

I also just don't write about the real world. I am not at all inspired to write about grit. I wish I could.

Books and Other Stories
I like reading... At the moment I'm on a graphic novel kick (mainly 'cause I just visited a friend in Exeter who took me to the local comic book shop... In possibly related news, I am now broke) but that varies hugely. Historical fiction was last month. I'm very into fantasy and science fiction... Despite the fact that everything I write seems to come out very dark at the moment - I love me a happy ending.

I don't like reading... I haven't really come up with a genre that I hate yet. But I have to say that an unsympathetic hero makes my blood boil. If I don't like you or the things you do then I'm not going to want to spend any time with you... except, of course, Macbeth is awesome and, if you give me long enough, I'd come up with a hundred examples.

My favourite films and TV: Loving True Blood at the moment, Doctor Who is in my blood (my father's three jobs when I was born: Phone the family, feed the cat and record Doctor Who), the Mentalist - I love mysteries and have a great weakness for the Midsommer Murders.

I loved Being Human. Seriously if you haven't seen the first season of that then do so at once! Sherlock was also amazing.

X-factor and the Apprentice are my guilty secrets and I mean secrets... I didn't tell my boyfriend I watched them until we'd passed the six month mark. Had to make sure he was already invested.

Favourite music: Anything! I'm a pop fan, a 'rock/folk/indie/classical (rarely) and anything else a friend points me towards' fan... Saving Jane is good as is Seth Lakeman.

My fandoms: Not really active in anything at the moment....

Everything Else

I'm really eager to improve so if anyone likes the sort of thing that they see on my journal and are up for betaing then drop me a line!
