It was a pleasant Saturday afternoon when we arrived at the Zoo. Throngs of people turned out due to the day being so wonderfully cool and partly cloudy. It really was a great day to be outside, and a welcome one after a particularly dreary winter!
Naturally, my first instinct was to go visit the Big Cats, since they are my all-time favorite creatures in the Animal Kingdom, but we passed the Tropical Birdhouse first. Let me tell you, it sure was tropical in there! It was hotter and more humid in there than the weather outside, which makes sense for all those avians that are used to that kind of climate. There were plenty of new and interesting birds to see that hadn't been on exhibit the last time we came down, so it was still a great way to start the day.
We mosied on down to the Big Cat area and saw that the lions were actually out in their yard (when we came last summer, they were passed out under the rocks...); so it was really a treat to see them out and about. The tiger, however, was still passed out under his little bamboo stand, but I got some nice shots of his sleepyface anyway.
The cats of the zoo were really out in force this trip; the jaguars came out for pictures and the ocelot was posing pretty on a rock outcropping. The leopard wasn't as cooperative this time, and the Fossas were passed out under some logs.
The meerkats did some cute posting, which was a relief after spending some time in the Reptile house. I'm not afraid of snakes, per se, but being around so many of them (and many of them venomous) gave me a fair bit of "heeby-geebies". The albino alligator was neat to see, though.
