Summary: Mary and Pete spend the day together.
"Mary, I know this might seem really weird and I'm sorry if it is. My partner's wife Jean asked us to dinner. Would you be interested?" Malloy asked nervously.
"Doesn’t seem weird at all. I’d love to go." Mary gave him a soft smile. "They aren’t going to ambush us, are they?"
Malloy sighed having the hardest part of the question behind him. Then he cracked an impish smile, chuckled and replied, “If they do, we can simply make a run for it. Don’t worry…. I’ll cover you.”
Mary shook her head and laughed. “You’d better. I’d never forgive you if you left me behind.”
"Trust me. I couldn’t leave a Miss America behind," he stated with grin.
Mary blushed as his usual Miss America comment. "Was there a specific day she had in mind for dinner?"
"You know she didn’t say. I’ll have to ask her," Pete added.
"I hope I have some time to find something nice to wear," Mary commented as she looked down at the jeans she had on. They were stained with oil from helping Pete work on a car.
Malloy wiped the back of his oil slicked hand across his forehead and he looked at Mary, "Well, I think you look beautiful just the way you are, a regular pageant, Grease Monkey," he stated with a mischievous and slick grin. He even added a wink for good measure.
“For the talent portion of tonight’s event, I’ll change your oil and replace 4 spark plugs." Mary grinned at him.
"Hey, now that’s what I call true talent," Malloy added with widened grin.
Mary moved closer to Pete and took the rag from his hand. “Look at you getting oil on your face,” she chastised as she reached up to wipe at his face.
"Oil isn’t going to kill me Mary. Besides, I can share…," the strawberry blond added taking a oil covered finger and gently tapping her nose.
"Not very many women can help fix a car and enjoy themselves." Mary nods with a satisfied smile.
"Exactly," he exclaimed.
"I know oil won’t kill you. I just wanted an excuse to get closer to you." Mary’s eyes follow his finger and crossed slightly when they touch her nose. "And there goes my streak of no oil on my face," Mary says with a wrinkle of her nose, but she laughed so that Pete would know that she’s not angry.
His face contained a slight blush at her blunt honesty. He then chuckled, “Tell ya what...why don’t we go inside and wash up and take in a drive in movie? Your choice.”
Mary smiled and nodded her head. “That would be great.” She turned to walk towards the house. “Are you sure you’re up to a movie picked by me?”
"I figure, if I don’t like the movie I could always fall asleep," Malloy answered.
When they got to the house, Mary turned and looked at him, “You wouldn’t fall asleep on a date with me, would you?” she asked with a little pout
"Oh I don’t know," he teased deliberately. He wasn’t really going to fall asleep on her unless he couldn’t help it, but he’d do everything in his power to stay awake on a date.
Mary gave him an assessing look and smiled, “Hmmm…I might just have to find a way to keep you awake. Maybe a movie with some action will help.” She walked into the house and headed towards the bathroom.
"That might help," Malloy replied with a laugh. He followed her to the restroom to wash his hands and his forehead. He just prayed the action movie wouldn’t involve policemen or women getting shot, killed, strangled. He didn’t like to think of these things.
Mary washed her hands, and the spot of oil off of her nose. She took a cloth and wet it to try to get a stain out of the bottom of the shirt she had on. "What about Planet of the Apes?”
She didn’t actually care either way, a movie was a movie and she enjoyed just about anything as long as she had good company and that’s what she has with Pete.
"Planet of the Apes?" He questioned.
Mary nodded. “My brother says it’s good. I usually take his suggestions with a grain of salt - we have very different opinions on what’s good.”
"Well I should hope your taste varies slightly from your brothers." Malloy stated with a cheeky grin. "Sounds like a real blast. Whatever you’d like to see is alright to me. We can take my car if you’d like. Want to take a lunch or picnic dinner with us?" He asked curiously taking his turn to wash up.
Mary looked Pete up and down and smiled. “Oh yes. Steve and I have vastly different tastes, but similar in some ways. With movies, though, he has pretty good tastes. Danny, though…I’m not so sure about."
Mary thought a moment before nodding her head, "I think taking a picnic with us is a good idea. I can change really quick and put something together for us while you get your car ready."
"Alright, will make it a dinner and a movie night. I’ll clean up the garage a bit and get the car out. I’ll probably want to change before we leave too. Less you like to sit next to dust mops and oil rags."
Mary reached out and brushed some dirt from his shirt. “Changing would be a very good thing…unless you want to sit around in dirty clothes for a couple of hours.”
"Oh, before I forget…. you might want to call your aunt and let her know about the plans. We wouldn’t want her to be worried, now would we?"
"Thanks for the reminder. She probably would have gone out driving to look for me," Mary said, “Or she would have called the police to report me missing.”
Mary looked at the clock on the wall and thought for a moment about how long it would take her to make something for them to eat. "What do you say we leave in about 30 minutes? Anything in particular you’d like to eat?"
"Anything is good as long as it’s edible. The movie must not be too bad if he suggested it. I trust both of your judgements," he added with a smirk.
“Tell her she’s more than welcome to chaperone if she’d like…" he teasingly called after her. "Half-an hour sounds good. Think you can be ready in that time frame?" Malloy returned the inquiry with a silly tone.
“I knew there was a reason I liked you. You’re such a smart man. And good looking too. That’s more than enough time for me," Mary calls out. "What about you? And my food is totally edible. Again, don’t listen to my brother about anything he says about me."
"Sandwiches, chips, and or whatever food we can find would be more than perfect, so far as I’m concerned. You?" He stated loud enough so that he might be heard in the other rooms. "If it wasn’t edible do you think my partner would be warning me to go on a diet?"
"I had fun helping you. And I learned stuff too." Mary paused at the door, "She might take you up on that offer. But, proper gentleman that you are, she trusts you. Me on the other hand…," Mary gives him a smile and a wink before heading to a room to change.
"Thank you," Malloy returned with a slightly flattered and a totally overjoyed blush. "Now I see why I like you. You ceaselessly flatter me not to mention you could totally be Miss America."
“I’m glad. You know good, not to mention skilled help is always hard to find,” Malloy added honestly. "Well, the offers always open. Especially if you have suspicions," he added knowing that she was teasing. "Now wait a minute…. I’m the cop. I’m supposed to suspect you." He calling teasingly as she walked out of the room to change. "Half-an-hour should be fine. I’ve had to change with less time."
"I need to work on my innocent face if people start thinking I’m not a good girl." Mary said with a smirk. "I’m okay with anything quick and simple. Don’t have the time to whip up something that would make a restaurant chef jealous.” Mary replied. “I remember you liked the chicken salad I made last week.”
"It wouldn’t hurt especially if you ended up being brought in as a suspect," Malloy chuckled. "Anything you fix would taste great. I am sure of it. You could make the worst tv dinner taste like a gourmet meal. You do make one heck of a mean chicken salad," the strawberry blond replied.
"The list of people I have to convince I’m a good girl just keep growing and growing," Mary says with a laugh and shake of her head. "I had a good teacher when it came to cooking."
A few minutes later Mary is back with clean clothes on and she stopped in the living room to call her aunt. “Hi Auntie…oh no, everything is fine. Pete’s going to take me out as a thank you for helping him with his car,” Mary pauses and laughs at what she’s told. “I’ll be sure to tell him you said, but you can’t have him because he’s mine.” Mary laughed again, told her aunt that she would see her later that night and thanked her again for agreeing to watch Joan for the night. After ending the call, Mary went to the kitchen to put together something for them to eat.
Malloy had quietly slipped outside and he prepped the car for their outing. Then he quickly re-entered the house and changed. When he had finished an idea popped into his head and seeing that she was still on the phone he left a note on the table. Malloy went to the neighbors to retrieve a surprise for Mary.
While in the kitchen, Mary put together a few sandwiches and checked that there was still chips leftover from when her brother visited. She was pleased to see that he bought her a couple of extra bags to ‘replace’ the ones he ate, so she grabbed one and put it with the rest of the food. The last things she got were the drinks. She packed them up and placed everything on the table by the front door.
"Are you ready Pete?" Mary called out as she went in search of her shoes.
He had just returned from the neighbors with small handful of fresh-cut roses. "I’ve been ready. I’m just waiting on you," he said holding out the roses to her. "Uh…. this is for …for working on the car with me," he stammered nervously.
Mary had just seen the note Pete left when he came back in holding flowers. Her eyes lit up when she saw them and smiled. “Oh, they’re beautiful.” Mary said as she took them and held them up to her nose to smell.
She leaned over and gave Pete a soft kiss on the cheek. “Thank you. I’ll go put them in a vase and some water and we can go.” She turned to go back to the kitchen and placed the flowers on the counter, filled up a vase that was sitting on the windowsill with water and placed all but one of the flowers in it. She took the vase and the left out flower to the living room, placed the vase on the side table.
"I think they look nice right here where everyone can see them." Mary said as she looked at Pete.
She held up the flower she left out, “This one I’ll put in my room.” she headed back to her bedroom and put the flower in the vase of lilies that she got from her Aunt’s garden and went back to the living room.
"All ready to go!" she said with a smile.
