Cricket

Today Adrian and I, along with Hannah and Emma from Bristol G&S, went down to Bath to watch cricket. Somerest were playing Worchesterhire, and we thought it would be a good excuse to get together and do something. More were invited, but didn't come.

Cue sunny weather. I mean really, really sunny - not a cloud in the sky, full summer sun type weather. It was HOT. 100 in the shade kind of hot, although I'm sure it didn't get that hot - maybe in the 80s. Given that last week it was cold enough for me to be putting my stole around me for warmth, this was a little shock to the body. But we came prepared. Sunscreen and bottles of liquid abounded, and we made full use of them. Ice cream was had. Sunglasses were donned - even I put my contacts in so that I could wear sunglasses. Adrian wore his hat; my hair was up so I couldn't really.

So we get to the cricket ground, and they've got a racket going, I'll tell you. It's on the other side of the rugby ground in the middle of Bath, and while the rugby ground has proper stands, and shade, the cricket ground is just a wicket in the middle of a bunch of grass. No shade, no stands, so you're sitting on hard plastic seats (or the grass) in the blinding sun. Oh, and paying £22 for the privledge. For a one day, 40 over a side game, this seemed a little rich to me. I mean, there wasn't even a proper place to sit! But paid we did, and had a nice time watching the game and talking about various things. We had picked up lunch at Waitrose in the form of baguette, lunchmeat and salmon paste. Hannah had brought muchos supplies of fruit, and so we all snacked on the offerings and enjoyed ourselves.

We lasted until just after the other team came on - about 5. The sun was getting to us, and we thought it was time to throw in the towel and retreat to shadier venues to cool down. Shame it's not working.

Edit: I managed to sunburn my face. Whoops. Also, I was coming back up some stairs next to the river towards Pultney bridge, and twisted my ankle. It caught me by surprise and I tumbled back down the small set of stairs, bruising my side. So now I have a sore arm and leg, and my ankle hurts. Bah.
