Premise for this post:
On Queer as Folk, Michael would always have something for Brian. Something his first boyfriend could not accept nor understand.
Main Post:
My question - Isn't your first love someone who will always be special to you?
I always assumed they would be. Maybe that's because I didn't have a falling out with mine and it just ended with out question or conflict. I mean that person is always special to me and always will be but could I put them before the person I love now. The answer: No.
The person who is in my arms or who I kiss goodnight will always be the most important person in the world to me.
In my opinion if you liked someone once, at least you should still like the memories of them. Just because the relationship is over doesn't mean you should forget the good times you had with them. I know I can't because they can still make me smile.
If you're lucky to still have them in your life, then that's great. Even if not, you can hate who they are now but even if you only have one good memory with them, keep it.
But no matter what, the person who you say "I Love You" too should always be the most important person in your life at the moment. You have to consider their feelings in big decisions and such. Still in the end it will be your choice of what happens but don't ever forget to include them in whatever could change your life.
Epilogue:
The past may be over and done with but memories exist for a reason, to make you smile and to make you sad. To make you learn. The present is what should be the most important. The future is undetermined but let the past and present factors help you decide it.
