Thoughts on Lost's season 3 finale

May 25, 2007 17:31

Okay, so I just got checked my flist and the lj people said all things should be back to normal, so I'm going to try to post this one more time.
No worries, it's behind a cut.

I happened to be one of the many Lost fans that accidentally stumbled upon the in-depth spoilers for the last two episodes even before "Greatest Hits" had even aired.  Needless to say, I wasn't surprised at what happened in last night's finale, but I would like to say everyone involved with last night's episode did an amazing job.  Those worth mentioning:
Jack:  Matthew Fox deserves a bit of credit.  After all, his flashbacks (or rather, flashforwards) were so far off of what loyal Lost viewers were used to seeing from this straight-laced hero.  I'm still in awe about the overall performance AND how the wardrobe and makeup people managed to make the character look like a hippie from the '60s.  I didn't so much like Jack in the island scenes (I can't believe he was willing to let Sayid, Jin, and Bernard die...if Kate would've been held captive, Jack would've been back there in a heartbeat), but the fact that he and Kate don't end up together off the island makes me soooo happy!
Rousseau and Alex:  I'll just lump these two together for the sake of saving space.  Yay, they finally got to meet!  Sure, it was a little awkward, but methinks Alex will be happier with Crazy French Woman than with crazy rat-eyed Ben.
Locke:  Yay!  He isn't dead!  And it was nice to see him wield a knife (into the back of Naomi, no less...yay) again.
And, last but not least...
CHARLIE!!!:  Oh my poor, poor Charlie!  Dominic's performance in the last two episodes was easily one of the best performances I've seen on Lost.  Ever.  Seriously, it's right up there with Terry O'Quinn's performance in "Walkabout," and we all know how much I loved his performance in that episode.  Charlie's heroic journey into The Looking Glass to turn off the switch that was blocking transmissions from getting off the island despite knowing from Desmond that he would die was enough to bring any die-hard fan to tears (wow, that was a mouthful).  And, Charlie deciding to stay in the room, lock the door, and drown to save Desmond...can you say selfless?

Now, here's my thoughts on Charlie's death:
Did it suck?  Yes.  Was it necessary?  I believe so.  Since the second episode back from the hiatus, fans were told that Desmond was having visions of Charlie's death.  Multiple visions.  We were set up to expect his death a long time ago, and I would have felt cheated if Charlie managed to escape death yet again.  He was truly the cat of the show:  honestly, how many times can you remember Charlie's life being in jeopardy even in the first season?  His 9 lives simply ran out.  I'm not saying I'm happy about it, but I do think everyone involved with the show prepared the fans appropriately (I mean, "Greatest Hits" was nothing but a sort of eulogy for the character).

Now, to the theories:
Who was in the coffin?:  At first, I thought it could be Locke; but that was only until Jack met up with Kate and she was like, "Why would I go to the funeral?"  When Kate said that, I thought maybe the person in the coffin is Ben.  Maybe Ben died because his tumor or whatever it was he had came back.  I don't know, though.  It could be Locke (although that would break my heart).
Also, it has been noted that the coffin was very small; although some people think it was a child in the coffin, I don't believe this is the case. If in fact the coffin was small and it was an Oceanic survivor, I could only see it as Locke. I know that contradicts my last statement, but think about it. Locke could have had his legs amputeed after he got off the island due to complications caused from sustaining all that damage to his legs whilst on the island (he's been stabbed by runaway debris and the hatch door closed on his legs in season 2). I don't want it to be Locke, but I could see him committing suicide because he had something taken away that he had been given back (there are screenshots of the newspaper clipping that said the person committed suicide).
Flash-forward?:  First of all, that flash-forward was an awesome twist that I really wish I hadn't found out about ahead of time.  With that being said, I think fans just witnessed a change in the format of the show.  Since there are only three seasons left, I think the writers are going to start from the future in season 4 and flashback to what happened on the island and the events leading up to the Losties' rescue.  Perhaps they'll focus on the different characters and how their lives have been affected (probably for the worse) since the "rescue."
Good rescue or bad rescue?:  Personally, I think Naomi was working for Penny's father, Mr. Widmore.  I also believe that Mr. Widmore is a powerful member of the Dharma Initiative (which would explain how Naomi got the photo of Desmond and Penny).  Basically, Naomi and her team are looking to come to the island and wipe out Ben and the Others and anyone else that stands in their way.  Okay, that may be a bit violent, but in light of the 15 deaths in the two-hour episode last night, maybe it isn't. I don't think I can wait until February for a shortened season.  I actually might die!  Okay not really, but still.  UGH!
