My dad came home for lunch today and told me as I was laying on the couch that one of my teachers passed away. I asked which one and he replied, "Kerlin," and my heart sank. Partly because she's about the same age as my parents and has two kids that are younger than I am. Partly because she was so sweet. But it was mostly because she was the person that really made me want to be a writer. Ever since taking her seventh grade English class where I had to write a book of poetry, I've known that's what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
In high school when I was in Sunshine, she was my Sunshine Lady. Even though two other girls chose her too, she had no problem giving us all little gifts, even though she didn't know who we were until the end of the year.
I saw her this summer and she looked just fine.
It's sickening what this illness can do to a person. I had to see it with my grandmother and I'm sorry she had to go through it. At least now, they're both out of their misery.
She was such an amazing woman and she will be missed.
