maine was nice. we did a lot of stuff, but most of all we just picked and ate blueberries. the whole thing was nice. my favorite thing was the second farm we stayed at-- it had animals and all sorts of things and some cool people that i really enjoyed getting to know and hang out with.
blueberries get raked, not hand picked. the rake looks like a dustpan with long tines on the end of it. you sort of comb the blueberries off then put them in a container, like a box or pail. what takes longer than raking, though, is the winnowing. we did it two different ways (one at each farm): by hand and by machine. basically you use one of these things (hands or machine) to take out all the green berries and smashed berries and stems and leaves.
in our free time we went to the beach and hitch hiked and campfired. nearly all our food was over a campfire. i guess you could say we roughed it.
the bus ride was three days either way. on the way there i thought maine didn't really exist-- thought we'd just stay in greyhound land forever (i was proved wrong). on the way back jack was with us (he hitch hiked out and got there two days before we left!) and we stopped in new york city for a few hours. im really glad to have seen the city, but new york is really overwhelming. maybe i just thought so since i had just left a farm, but i didnt like new york. the air smells and everything you look at is an advertisement. anyway, we saw the empire state building and rode the subway and saw the village and also cbgb's (whatever).
the whole trip was great though. i do miss the blueberries.
looks like im taking a semester off this fall. take some time, you know. i'll be in fort collins and if you know of anyone who needs a roommate, let me know.
well, that's that (mostly).
