Jason weaved his way through the alien crowd, smiling and brushing off the compliments and the pats on the back he was getting from all directions. “Valedictorian,” the word echoed around him, “Your parents must be so proud.” Jason kept up his smile, despite his sudden urge to vomit. If only they knew…

He kept weaving, politely putting up with the praises and artfully excusing himself in search of friends. Soon, however, he was cornered by a much more powerful force.

Mom and Dad. Margaret and William McConnell. The all powerful hands that managed to always have the last say in everything he did. Well, almost everything…

“Jason…” said William, patting his son on the shoulder, “That was wonderful. Fantastic speech.” Although it was one of the nicest things he had ever said to him, it came out forced. To Jason, it almost sounded robotic. “Now,” He continued, leaning in to emphasize that this was what really mattered, “How are the details of that scholarship going?”

Margaret laid a hand on William’s arm, cutting him off. “William, no need to talk about college. Jason… That was a nice speech. It’s nice to see your oratory skills are adequate too.” She, too, awkwardly patted Jason’s shoulder.

“Um…” Jason trailed off, maintaining a cool, blank face. “Thank you Mom… Dad.” He stopped, fishing around for something else to say. Finding nothing, he moved to plan B. “Well… I have to go talk to some of my friends. Thank you so much for coming.” Jason shook their hands, a blatantly fake smile in place. “Good bye.” He slowly backed away and turned around, immersing himself in the crowd, praying to see a familiar face.

“Jason.” Came a familiar, breathless voice from behind him. A broad smile took over his face before he even turned around. He knew that voice.

The joy of hearing Peter’s voice was heightened today not only by the sheer boredom he’d been faced with for the last few hours, but by the mere fact that Peter was talking to him. Last night Peter had begged him once again to come out, this time right here, right now. At graduation. He kept going on and on about it being the perfect time. Something about not enough time for long silences and periods of awkwardness, but just enough time for acceptance, if it was going to happen.

But Jason just… couldn’t. It wasn’t something he could do, and definitely not now. God, how was he supposed to come out on graduation day? How would he just turn around after that speech, after practically publicly confirming his “perfection” and tell the world he liked boys. But, oh no, worse than that, he’d actually been dating one for the past few years.

He tried to shake all thoughts of last night as he looked at Peter. He was here; he wasn’t pissed. This was good. “Peter.” He smiled, looking to the wall behind him, at the crowd, anywhere other than at Peter, who was just looking so cute and so god damn kissable in that dorky hat, with that smile and that look in his eye that made Jason melt inside. He had to look anywhere but at that; he wasn’t sure he could restrain himself if he dared to look. And, despite what Peter said, now would be the absolute worst time for him to come out, surrounded by his parents and friends and their parents. And his first choice on coming out wouldn’t exactly be that graphic. “So…” Jason continued, still smiling weakly, “Did I deliver?”

Peter laughed and Jason’s heart leapt, his laughter somehow ringing in his soul. There was a time when this would have made Jason fear for his life and future, but now it touched his soul. “God, you sound so stupid right now. But…” His eyes trailed up Jason’s body, before making contact with his, “You did amazing, Jase. Just… amazing.”

Despite himself, Jason felt a blush creeping onto his cheeks. This was probably far too emotional for public, but no one was watching, right? “Thanks, Peter.” He smiled nervously. “That… That means a lot.”

Peter bit his lip, moving closer to Jason. Just a small step, and there was still plenty of space between them, but the closeness was somehow comforting. “I… I mean it Jason. Who knew you could do that? The acting thing was a given, but the writing? God…”

Jason laughed dryly. “Maybe I’m just that amazing.”

“Maybe…” Peter replied, his voice low and raspy, but quiet enough that only Jason could hear it. His dark brown eyes were swimming as he slowly took another step, closing the remaining space between them as Jason’s brow furrowed. What was Peter doing? What the hell was Peter doing?

Although, as Peter tilted his head up to Jason’s and he leaned up to kiss him, Jason’s brow relaxed and his eyelids fluttered shut.
