Some time later Kris was woken to quiet knocking on his door. He groaned, pulling the blankets over his head. He heard his door squeak open a crack and could imagine his roommate sticking his head in the room. “Hey, Kris, you awake?” Cale asked. Kris just grunted. He was so not in the mood to talk. “Adam’s here.” Kris heard his door open wider and then the slow shuffle of his best friend’s socked feet. “He said he’s been calling you for hours and you haven’t answered. He’s worried. Are you okay?” Kris felt him sit down on the edge of the bed and Cale placed his hand on Kris’ leg. “You know, if you don’t talk to me, I’m pretty sure Adam’s just going to barge on in here,” Cale told him.
Kris whipped the blanket off his head and sat up straight, tears on his face, looking horrified. “No!” he exclaimed. “He can’t come in here!”
Cale frowned, his eyebrows knit together. “Kris, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
“Because… I’ve ruined everything,” he said. “Just… please, make him leave and I’ll tell you everything. Okay?” Kris gripped his friend’s hands hard. Cale nodded and left the room, the frown still frozen in place.
Kris waited and finally heard the stomp of boots and the loud slam of a door. A moment later Cale was back in Kris’ room and sat on the edge of the mattress again. “He’s gone,” he announced, his face full of worry. Kris knew Cale was wondering what could possibly have happened to make him not want to see Adam, the guy who made Kris happier than Cale had ever seen him.? “Now tell me what’s going on,” Cale commanded gently. “How did you ruin everything?”
Kris looked down at his soft plaid comforter, he didn’t know if he could physically talk about this. He wanted to tell his best friend everything that he feared and have him say it would all be okay, that Kris just had a normal flu or something. But how would his friend comfort him if he couldn’t get the words out? He looked up into Cale’s worried eyes and the tears fell like rain. “I… I think I’ve been cursed by the God and Goddess,” Kris said quietly.
Cale chuckled, a bit of relief in his voice as he said, “Kris, you know I was only joking about that, right?”
Kris nodded, worrying his lower lip between his teeth. “Yeah, but something clicked when you said it. And… and damnit, Cale, I swear I’ve got all the signs of pregnancy! And you’ve never bottomed before, so… so…” Kris’ eyes filled with tears and he couldn’t continue.
Cale’s jaw dropped and his eyes widened making him look slightly like a cartoon character. If Kris wasn’t so scared that he was either going crazy or carrying an unholy child in his belly, he would have totally cracked up at the look on Cale's face. “You’re serious,” Cale murmured. Kris bobbed his head up and down a few times. “Oh, Kris,” Cale sighed, then pulled his best friend tight to his side, his arm wrapped around Kris’ shoulders. “What can I do to prove you wrong?” he asked.
Kris glared at his roommate. “You don’t know that I’m wrong."
“Well, have you ever heard of this happening before? Has Adam?”
“Like Adam even knows the scriptures we were taught,” Kris scoffed.
Cale nodded. “True. Unless… you’ve told him?” He raised an eyebrow in question.
Kris looked at Cale in horror. “God no! He’d think I was crazy!”
Cale rolled his eyes. “No, he’d think how we were raised is crazy, not you. He knows you, Kris, and knows you don’t believe a word they preached.”
Kris looked down at his hands as he wound his fingers together nervously. “Cale, I’m scared,” he said quietly.
Cale frowned. “Why?”
Kris lifted his watery gaze to his best friend’s. “Because I think I need to go back to the Sanctuary and find out what’s going on.”
“Kris, no!” Cale gasped. “You do not need to go back there! Are you freaking kidding me?! There is absolutely no reason for you to even think like that!” Cale was becoming angry. Kris remembered how Cale had sworn that he’d never let them go back there ever again. When they ran off into the night, he'd promised they would never return.
“Cale…” Kris sighed. “I just… I have to. What if the scriptures were right?”
“You actually think the God and Goddess would curse a man for loving another man?” Cale asked incredulously.
“Well… no, not exactly,” Kris answered.
“Then, what exactly, do you think was right about those scriptures?” Cale crossed his arms over his chest and narrowed his dark eyes at his friend.
“I just… what if, for some reason, the scripture is right, that some men can have a child like a woman can? But what if it’s just a normal kid? Not some unholy child that we were preached about? What if there really is a baby growing inside me, a harmless baby?”
“If it’s true, why don’t we ever hear about it on the news? Why don’t we ever see pregnant men walking around?” Cale asked.
Kris shrugged and bit his lower lip. “That’s what I have to figure out,” he said. “And I can only do that by going back to the Sanctuary. I just… I need to find out what’s going on with me. Don’t you understand?” Cale didn’t say anything. “Please, Cale, think about if it were you and the only answer was back where we came from? Wouldn’t you need to go back too even though you swore you never would?”
After a moment of tense silence, Cale sighed and dropped his arms from his chest in defeat. “I guess you’re right. When I put myself in your shoes, I think I’d do the same.” Kris nodded. “So when do we leave?” Cale asked.
Kris’ eyes bugged out of his head in surprise. “What?! No, uh-uh, no way. You are not coming with me!”
“Yes, I am,” Cale argued. “You cannot go back there without some reinforcement. Who knows what they’ll do to you when you go back!”
“I know that!” Kris exclaimed. “That’s why I don’t want you to get caught up in it!” He took a deep breath. “One of us needs to make it out of there alive and I’m the one that has to go back. I don’t want to bring you down with me. You got that?” Cale sighed, but nodded his head in agreement. It was clear that he did not like this plan.
