CHAPTER ONE

Kris paced up and down the hallway outside of his bathroom, chewing nervously at his thumb nail. He had been feeling so sick lately and foods that normally made him salivate, now made him vomit. Cale had jokingly suggested that Kris might have been cursed by the God and Goddess of Love for “laying with another man,” and must be going through the sickness that would lead to Kris’ unholy child. Kris’ eyes had widened in horror as Cale laughed. They had both decided long ago that this belief must be false, as they had seen plenty of men around Hollywood who were obviously gay and definitely not sick with an unholy child growing inside them.

But now as Kris paced, alone in the apartment he shared with Cale, he thought back to when they had first escaped from Pure Love.

Like all kids in Pure Love, Cale and Kris had saved their money their whole lives in preparation of someday needing a house to live in with their family. They both had enough money in their savings for one-way bus tickets to California. They even had enough money left over for a tiny one bedroom loft. The only furniture they possessed, however, was an old air mattress that they had to share. Neither boy cared though, they were just happy to be free of the cult back in Arkansas, to be able to live the lives they wanted, to be in love with whomever the Universe saw fit. But this newfound world and freedom scared them, it was so much at once and unlike anything they'd ever experienced. But they knew enough that they needed jobs and bank accounts to put their money in. The jobs weren’t exactly the best, only minimum-wage, but they kept food in their bellies and a roof over their head without draining their left-over money completely.

The two boys worked long hours trying to survive. They each came to the conclusion that the only way to get better paying jobs was to have some sort of skill set under their belts. So the plan was to save as much money as they could and try to apply to community college. They were able to get in on scholarships and financial aid. Before they knew it, they were able to get jobs through the school that earned them more than their janitorial skills had and gave them school credits towards their degrees.

With being in college, it didn’t take long for the pair to learn that they had been rather sheltered back in Pure Love. There was music on the radio they’d never heard before and TV shows they’d never seen. There was food they’d never even heard of and most importantly they noticed that being gay wasn’t that big a deal for the most part. Sure, they saw and heard the cruelty people had for homosexuals, but that was a rare occurrence, something they really couldn’t believe after all the stories they had been told as children. LA even had a day called “LA Pride” that was all about being proud of your sexuality and supporting one another and their rights. The LA Pride Parade had been something to behold, men holding hands with other men, women holding hands with other women, and people showing their support for it all. Cale and Kris had almost cried tears of joy upon seeing how free and proud and normal these people were despite their sexualities. If you had asked them to describe their emotions at that time, neither would have been able to explain it as there were no words for the kind of happiness that flowed through their veins at this miraculous discovery.

It was about a month after LA Pride that Kris and Cale had learned that homosexual couples could have families. Some of them would adopt unwanted children, others had women who would carry a fetus in her womb for them, the word for it was “surrogate.” Kris had always wanted kids, a family, but the idea of being intimate with a woman made his stomach revolt. He thought it would always be a fantasy for him. But once he learned that he could still have a family, albeit non-conventionally, it gave him new hope that maybe his life-long dream of the perfect family would come true. Now that he was out of Pure Love he could fall in love with a handsome man, they could adopt or have a surrogate carry their own child to term, and a house with a white picket fence. Yes, life outside the cult was hard work now, but it’d all be worth it when he found his soul mate and they started their life together.

Kris continued to pace and bite at his nails nervously. What if those scriptures he’d been taught for the first eighteen years of his life were true? Maybe he was carrying an unholy child inside of him. He didn’t have a fever and as far as he knew, no one around him had been sick, so there was no way he caught this illness from someone. Besides, he didn’t feel nauseous all the time, only when he first got up in the morning and at the smell of different foods. He just didn’t understand. Would the Higher Power really do this to someone just because they loved another person? Was he really supposed to believe that?

When Kris realized what he had to do, he felt like he was going to vomit. He closed his eyes and breathed slowly through his nose. It didn’t help. As his stomach did an excruciating flip, Kris burst through the bathroom door and bent over the toilet just in time to empty what little was in his stomach.
