I WOULD WALK A THOUSAND MILES JUST TO FALL DOWN AT YOUR DOOR

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Athena said as she paced in her bedroom. “You’re seriously not coming back East for our anniversary?”

Tommy sighed on the other end of the line. “I’m sorry, babe, but there’s nothing I can do about it. That blizzard that’s coming your way totally ruined any plans of air travel on my end.”

Athena took a deep breath and let it out slowly as she sat down on the edge of her bed. “Are you absolutely positive you can’t make it out here?” she asked. “I mean, it’s one year! That’s important!”

“I know it is,” Tommy murmured. “You think I’d actually miss it on purpose? I had a whole spectacular night planned for us.”

“You… you did?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Shit,” Athena muttered and covered her eyes with her free hand.

“I wish there was something more I could do,” Tommy told her. “Even just to be there to hold you because you’re upset right now. Which, ya know, you wouldn’t be if I could be there.” He sighed deeply.

“This sucks hardcore,” Athena replied.

“Yeah, I know.”

Silence stretched between them. Neither knew what to do. It’d been months since they’d seen each other and now their anniversary plans were ruined. “So what do we do?” Athena asked after a while.

“I think the only thing we can do is skype and pray that this doesn’t happen when Christmas rolls around,” Tommy answered. “Because there’s really no way around the weather.”

Athena sighed quietly. “I guess not.” There was a moment of silence. “Do you want to skype now? Or later?”

“Later,” Tommy answered. “I have to get some things set up first.”

“Set up?” Athena perked up a little at those words.

“Yeah, I still want to try to make this romantic even if it’s not in person.”

Athena’s eyes misted over. “Really?” she asked quietly.

“Of course,” Tommy replied. “I had such a romantic night planned for us and now it’s ruined. I want to try to salvage some of it.”

“Thank you, baby,” she murmured.

“It’s my pleasure.”

“I love you, Tommy.”

“Love you too, Thena.” With that the couple hung up.

Athena smiled and laid back on her bed. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad being apart on their anniversary. After all, technology had come a long way in the twenty-six years they’d been alive.
