CHAPTER TWELVE

Tommy stood at the counter mixing melted butter in to a big bowl of popcorn. Dave and Bella had decided that the three of them were going to have a movie night. Apparently they wanted to cheer Tommy up and have a marathon of all his favorite scary movies. It was sweet of them, even if he really wasn’t in the mood, which he wasn’t. It’d been a few weeks since Adam’s surprise party and Tommy had been calling him every day since. But Adam wouldn’t pick up the phone and it was starting to get to him. He just wanted everything to be alright between him, Adam and Bella. After all, they might be sharing babies for the next eighteen years.

Tommy sighed and poured the rest of the butter on the second bowl of popcorn. He heard bare feet pad up behind him and then arms slide around his waist. “Dave, you know I said no cuddling when Bella’s around. It’ll make her jealous,” he said with a straight face.

Bella smacked Tommy in the shoulder. “Don’t you know you’re not supposed to tease a pregnant woman like that? Do you want me to go in to early labor?”

Tommy chuckled as he sprinkled salt on both bowls. “Sorry,” he told her.

“You better be,” Bella replied, resting her cheek against the back of his shoulder. There was a beat of silence. “How ya doing?” Bella murmured.

Tommy shrugged. “I’m fine,” he answered.

“Tommy,” Bella sighed. “You know what I mean.”

“And what’s that?” Tommy asked, keeping himself occupied with salting the popcorn.

“You’ve been trying to get in touch with Adam with no luck for weeks now,” Bella said. “I just… It seems like it’s been upsetting to you. Why do you think we’re watching all your favorite horror movies tonight?”

Tommy sighed and finally turned around to face his girlfriend. “Bella, I just…” He shook his head sadly. “It’s just hard, ya know? Adam and I were so close. Now he won’t even pick up when I call. He sends it straight to voicemail. It… It hurts is all.”

“I know,” Bella whispered. “It hurts for me too.”

Tommy wrapped his arms around Bella, pulling her close and resting his head on top of hers. “I miss him,” he murmured.

Bella gave him a squeeze. “I know you do,” she said. “I miss him too.” There was a moment of silence. “Tell ya what, two weeks from now when we get the test results back, we’ll actually go to Adam’s house to tell him, okay?”

“What if he won’t let us in?” Tommy asked.

“You do have a spare key, right?”

Tommy chuckled. “Yeah, I do.”

“Then we’ll just break in. Well, can it be considered breaking in when we have a key?”

Tommy chuckled again. “I have no clue.”

“Doesn’t matter anyway, we’ll just take him hostage.” Tommy laughed as Dave called out to them from the living room.

“Hey you two! Stop with the quickie and get your asses in here or I’ll start the movie without you!”

Bella snorted. “Keep your pants on, Dave!” she called back.

“I hope that’s what you guys are doing!” Dave retorted. Bella muffled her laughter in Tommy’s shirt.

“He’s such a dork,” she said.

Tommy grinned at her. “Yeah, but that’s why we love him.”

Bella nodded. “Yes, indeed.” Then the two took the bowls of popcorn in to the other room to start their movie marathon.

Half-way through the first movie, Bella, who was stationed between the two men, had a white-knuckled grip on their hands and her eyes closed. Tommy pulled his hand from her vice-like grip and wrapped his arm around her. “Hey,” he murmured. “We don’t have to watch this if you don’t want.”

“No!” Bella exclaimed. “If we turn it off now, even though I know how it ends, I’ll have nightmares about how it ends! I won’t be able to sleep all night. I gotta see how it ends in order to not have nightmares.”

“Um, okay…” Tommy replied slowly.

Bella smacked him in the stomach. “Shuddup,” she muttered. “I know I’m weird. But that’s just how my brain works.”

“Aw, it’s okay, I don’t think you’re weird,” Dave told her, wrapping an arm around her.

“Thanks, Davey,” she replied, snuggling in to his side.

“Hey, what about me?” Tommy asked, using his wicked puppy-dog eyes. Bella pulled him in to her side so they were leaning in to Dave like a Bella-sandwich.

“Is this better?” she asked.

Tommy nodded, snuggling in to her side and wrapping both arms around her waist. “Perfect,” he murmured.

By the time the movie ended, Dave was snoring softly. Bella snorted quietly and kissed him on the cheek. “So cute,” she murmured. Dave stirred and looked at her blearily.

“Is the movie over?” he asked.

Bella nodded, running her fingers through his hair. “Why don’t you go to bed?” she suggested. “You seem really tired.”

Dave nodded. “Yeah, yeah. Okay. But you guys keep having fun. Sorry I’m a party-pooper.” He hugged Bella before getting off the couch and heading upstairs to bed.

Bella turned to Tommy, but he was already up and putting another movie in. “Which one is next?” she asked.

Tommy grinned over his shoulder at her. “It’s a surprise.”

Bella rolled her eyes. “Great. You’re probably putting in ‘It’ or something of the like. And if you are, I’m going to kill you,” she threatened. Tommy just chuckled and came back over to sit on the couch. Bella curled her legs up on the couch beside her as she leaned in to Tommy’s side. Tommy wrapped an arm around her and pressed ‘play’ on the DVD. Bella cringed internally, scared of what that button would bring up on the screen. But to her delight it wasn’t another scary movie. It was ‘Cinderella,’ which was one of her favorites as a child, and still was in fact.

“Tommy,” she murmured, turning her face to his.

Tommy smiled sweetly, running his fingers through Bella’s hair. “Surprise,” he said quietly. Bella leaned in closer and pressed her lips softly to his.

“I should have known it wouldn’t be another horror movie,” she stated. “Your surprises are always good ones.”

Tommy grinned. “You think so?”

Bella nodded. “Yeah. I mean, your last surprise was giving me a ticket out here.”

“True,” Tommy replied. “And that worked out pretty amazingly even though you were so scared.”

Bella nodded again. “I just wish I had known how much you wanted a family or I would have wasted the cash to call you while you were overseas.”

“Really?” Tommy asked.

“Yup. But I was too scared to tell you over the phone.” Bella shrugged.

“And you had no reason to be,” Tommy told her, making a small blush rise to her cheeks. Tommy kissed her head. “So, you ready to watch?” Bella nodded enthusiastically and Tommy chuckled lightly. He highlighted the full movie and hit the ok button. Then the opening credits of the movie began.

Bella snuggled deep in to Tommy’s side so happy to be watching a fairy-tale instead of some horrific movie. She used to be so in to horror, but something happened after the age of sixteen that made her have nightmares after watching those types of movies. She didn’t know what it was, maybe it was the fact that she had been traumatized by her boyfriend at age fifteen, but whatever it was, it made her love for horror movies quickly diminish. But Tommy had been so sad after Adam’s birthday party that she had been willing to suffer through his favorite movies if that’s what it took to cheer him up. Now she couldn’t help thinking about how much he must really love her to shut off his favorite movies and put on a Disney one just so she wouldn’t be scared anymore. Most guys would make their girlfriends suffer through it, saying that they would protect them. But not Tommy and that was another reason Bella loved him so much.
