CHAPTER NINE

ZAC’S POV

I wake up, not knowing how long I’ve been asleep. I can’t help smiling at the naked body wrapped around my back though. I look over my shoulder to find the warm body belonging to Olivia. Fuck! I cheated on Kate!

“Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!” I mutter as I scramble out of the bed, quickly pulling on my boxer-briefs and jeans. Olivia stirs, sitting up on her elbow as she rubs her eyes with a fist.

She smiles softly. “Come back to bed,” she murmurs, reaching a hand out to me.

“Get out,” I tell her quietly.

My ex furrows her brows. “What?”

“Get out,” I repeat a little louder.

“But, Zac…”

“Get out,” I interrupt. “I just cheated on Kate. You need to leave now. I can’t believe I did this!” I kick at a t-shirt on the floor.

Olivia slowly climbs from the bed, tears in her eyes, and quickly slips on her clothes. I follow her as she makes her way to the front door. She turns, her hand on the knob and says, “You can’t deny what we had today. But I want you to know, that you better hurry up and realize we belong together because if you don’t, I might not be here when you come find me. I can’t wait forever, Zac, and I may not even be in Tulsa when you come looking.”

“You’d move back to Boston just to get away from me?” I ask.

Olivia nods. “I can’t be so close to you like this and not be with you,” she explains. “It hurts too much. So, make your decision soon.” Then she’s out the door, sprinting to her car.

I sigh, so confused and make my way down to the basement where my studio is. I sit down at the piano, the place I do my best thinking. I plunk at the keys with one finger, picking out different tunes. After a while, a new melody comes to fruition. I tinker around with it for a few minutes before getting the basics of it down. As I play it over and over, words start to flow behind my eyelids. I hurry to write them down. After two hours have passed, I’ve got all the lyrics and the whole piano part worked out.

I read over the lyrics I’ve hastily scribbled down and realize what I’ve been writing about. Or rather who I’m writing about and it’s not Kate. I now know what I have to do. I’m just not sure I can or know how to do it. Maybe I should give it a few days. I sigh and go over to my drums, working out a beat for the new song.

OLIVIA’S POV

When I get home, I run right up to Aaron’s room. Luckily he’s still there and hasn’t left for work yet. “Aaron,” I sob, entering his room. He whirls around from his place at his mirror to look at me. His jaw drops.

“Baby, what happened?” He asks, hurrying over to me and wrapping his strong arms around me. I cling to him and tell him everything that happened between Zac and I. “My poor girl,” he murmurs once I’m done. He kisses my temple and guides me over to his bed to sit. “Are you okay?” he asks.

I shake my head. “I don’t know,” I answer honestly. “I mean, it was so wonderful being with him again. But now…” I sigh. “He went back to hating me. I really meant what I told him about moving back to Boston. I don’t know if I can handle being here anymore.”

“Give it some time before you make such a hasty decision,” Adam replies. “It may hurt less after a while and you could stay here. I know how much you love it here.”

I nod. “Yeah, I do love Tulsa. It’s warm and people are friendly and there’s so many places we can showcase our music.” I sigh. “I don’t really want to move back to Boston, but I’m not sure I can be so close to Zac.”

“Just give it some time before you make your final decision, okay?” Aaron says.

I nod. “Yeah, okay.” I sigh again and look at the clock on the bedside table. “Shit. You better get going or you’re going to be late.”

“You sure you don’t want me to call in sick?” my best friend asks.

“No, Sweetie, you need to make some money,” I tell him with a smirk. “I’m just going to call Taylor and tell him what happened. I’m sure he’ll be excited, thinking this is a sign or something.” I roll my eyes.

Aaron chuckles. “Okay, if you’re sure. But call me if you need me. I’ll come home straight away.”

I nod. “I know you will.” We stand and share a tight, comforting hug. Then Aaron is running down the stairs as I go to my bedroom to make my call to Zac’s older brother.

Taylor picks up on the third ring. “Hey, Liv!” he greets me cheerily.

“Hey, Tay,” I sigh.

“What’s wrong?” he asks.

I sigh again. “I um… Zac and I slept together.”

“What?!” the singer screeches.

“You heard me,” I mutter.

“Yeah, I did, but maybe I didn’t hear you right. Did you really just say that you slept with Zac?” he asks.

I nod, but then remember he can’t see me. “Yup, that’s what I said. You heard right.”

“Jesus Christ,” Taylor mutters. “How did that happen?”

“Do I really need to give you the sex talk?” I joke bitterly.

“No,” Taylor says, and I can almost see him rolling his eyes at me. “I just meant… How did you two wind up in bed together? I mean, last time I checked he wasn’t all too happy with you.”

I sigh. “I know. But… I went to talk to him after you left. I went to talk about what happened between you two. One thing led to another and we were forgetting about what had happened in the past and just…” I sigh again. “We fell asleep and when we woke up, he freaked out.” I shrug, looking down at my fingernails. I sandwich the phone between my ear and shoulder and begin to pick at my nail polish.

“Wow. Just… wow,” Taylor says. “I think this means something.”

“Like what?”

“I think it means he still loves you no matter what he says to the contrary. I think it means there’s still hope for you two. You just gotta wait and see.”

“I told him not to take too long making up his mind,” I murmur. “I told him I can’t wait forever and I may move back to Boston if he doesn’t hurry.”

“What? Move back to Boston? Why would you do that?”

“It’s just so hard, Tay. It’s hard to be this close to him and not have him.” I chew on my bottom lip, tears filling my eyes.

“But you can’t move back,” he says. “I’d miss you too much.”

“I know. I’d miss you too.”

“Then it’s settled, you’re not going to move.”

I laugh lightly. “Whatever you say, Taylor.”

“Hey, I’m serious,” he says with a pout to his voice.

“I know you are,” I murmur. “But I just don’t know if I can take it anymore. Aaron said to give it a while before I make my final decision.”

“Give it a couple months,” Taylor suggests.

“Okay, fine. I’ll give it two months. But that’s it. If he doesn’t come around…”

“I’ll help you pack.”

“Thanks.”

“I’ll really miss you if you leave Tulsa.”

“I know, Tay. I’ll miss you too. So much.”

“Then don’t go,” the blue-eyed pianist murmurs.

“I’m not going anywhere, at least not for two months.”

I hear him sigh. “We can make this work. We can get Zac back for you. I promise.”

“I don’t think it’s going to happen, Tay. I honestly don’t.”

“You can’t give up! He wouldn’t have slept with you today if he didn’t still have feelings for you. I know my brother and he just wouldn’t have done it.”

“Tay,” I sigh. “It’s hard to hold on to hope.”

“I know, but just give him a few days. I know he’ll come around.”

“Okay,” I murmur. “I’ll give him a few days. But that’s it.”

After a few more minutes, we say our goodbyes and hang up. I sigh and pray that Zac changes his mind about me, that I won’t have to leave this place that I now call home. I really love Tulsa and I don’t want to leave. But when it comes down to it, I honestly don’t think I can be so close to the man I love, capable of running in to him at any moment. I sigh and roll on to my side, closing my eyes. Soon I’m fast asleep.
