CHAPTER FOUR

I wake the next morning to a gentle knock on the door. "Hey guys, it's time to get up," the reverend calls through the door. Joe and I both groan.

"We'll be out in a minute, Dad," Joe says. "If we're not out in ten, have Nick bang on the door till we come out."

I hear the reverend chuckle. "Okay."

I pinch Joe's side. "Ow! What was that for?" he yelps.

"Why did you tell your dad that?" I ask.

"You mean about Nick?" I nod. "Because it's the only way we'll get out of bed today."

"And what's so bad about staying in bed all day?" I pout.

Joe grins. "Trust me, babe, I'd like nothing more than to stay in bed all day with you. But we have another venue to get to and we have to stop at your house to pack up some stuff for you. I mean, if you're still coming on tour that is." He gives me an unsure look.

I reach out to brush his hair from his eyes. "Of course I'm staying with you guys. Do you think I could actually change my mind?" I say with a grin. Joe smiles bashfully and ducks his head. "Plus I need to make some calls when I get home," I tell him.

Joe lifts his head. "What kind of calls?"

"Well, I've gotta call my boss for one."

Joe makes a face. "Ooh, yeah, I forget that people have mainstream jobs sometimes."

I grin at him. "Don't worry about it. I have a cool boss. I've known him since I was twelve. Hell, he knew I was going in to veterinarian medicine before I did. He gives me work credit for school and I actually have, like, a month of paid vacation time on the books so that's not a problem." I pause to take a breath then continue. "I also need to call my professors. I'll be missing the first two weeks of school."

Joe's face falls. "You can't miss school," he states.

I give his shoulder a rub. "Don't worry about it. I've had most of these professors before and I'm so far ahead that they'll probably let me school on the road for those first two weeks. I mean, I have all my books and the syllabuses for each class already. I don't see them giving me much of a problem."

Joe makes a face. "Are you sure?"

I nod. "It'll be fine."

"Just promise that if your teachers don't agree to let you do your schooling from the road that you'll go home early from the tour."

"Joe..."

"Promise," Joe says. "I can't have you failing school because of me."

I grin at him. "Okay. I promise."

Just then there's a knock on the door. "Five minute warning," Kevin Senior tells us.

"Thanks, Dad!" Joe calls to him. "We better get dressed." But instead of getting out of the bed, Joe turns to me and pulls me close. "I love you," he murmurs kissing me softly.

"Mm. I love you too," I reply. Then we untangle ourselves from the bed sheets and put on our discarded clothes from the night before.

Joe leads me in to the living space of the suite by the hand. "Nick, I want you to meet your future sister-in-law. This is Pixie Lucas. Pixie, Nick."

Nick smiles at me over his bowl of corn flakes. "Nice to meet you, Future Sister-In-Law."

I grin. "Likewise, Future Brother-In-Law."

Joe and I sit at the bar across from his younger brother as the reverend offers us some coffee. I eye the small pot he's holding in one hand. "I hope you're not expecting me to share that."

The reverend laughs. "Don't worry, this is two mugs worth. And there's more when this is gone." He hands me a mug full.

"Got any cream and sugar?" I ask.

"How's half and half and Splenda sound?" Kevin Senior asks.

"Sounds perfect. It's what I use at home actually," I tell him. "I have to watch my sugar intake."

This peaks Nick's interest. "Are you diabetic?" he asks.

I shake my head as I swallow the hot brew. "Not technically. But I've had high glucose readings and had to see a dietician and everything so I wouldn't become diabetic. It runs in the family and I'm a complete junk food junkie. Combine the two and you're on the fast track to diabetes land."

Nick nods. "How have you been doing with your sugar?"

"Actually, really well thanks to Splenda."

"Keep it up," Nick says. "You don't want to become insulin dependent."

"I hear ya," I reply, sipping at my coffee.

There's a few moments of silence, the only sounds that of Nick crunching his corn flakes, Joe slurping his coffee and Kevin strumming lightly at his guitar. Then Kevin Senior turns to me and says, "So where are you from?"

"Actually I live only about fifteen minutes from here," I tell him. "But I booked a hotel for the night. I didn't really want to drive home so late at night."

Nick snorts. "That was a waste of money."

I glare at him. "If this was a real table I'd kick you under it."

Joe lets out a short laugh and asks, "What hotel were you supposed to stay at?"

I blush lightly. "This one, actually."

Joe grins at me. "Really?" I nod. "It's a sign."

I return his grin. "Maybe it is."

Kevin makes a gagging noise from behind us. I really just want to turn around and give him the finger. But I restrain myself and focus on what the reverend is offering for breakfast.

When we're done eating, Joe decides to walk me to my room to pick up my things. We walk hand in hand down the hallway to the elevators, not saying a word. We ride the lift in a comfortable silence and walk down another hallway the same way. Back at my room I pack up my things while Joe watches. Then I begin to change in to my own clothes. I’m just about finished, only my shirt left to go, when I feel warm hands slide around my waist and come to rest on my belly.

“Joe, what are you doing?” I ask as he kisses lightly at my neck.

“Nothing,” he murmurs against my ear. “I just like it when you’re half naked.” I grin, turning around in his hold and slide my arms around his neck.

“We don’t have time for that,” I tell him, then lean up on my toes to kiss him softly. Before the kiss can get too intense, I pull away.

Joe groans. “Tease.”

“You started it,” I reply with a cheeky grin. The singer pouts and goes to sit on the edge of the bed. I pull my shirt on and begin to button it up.

Joe sighs. “You should have gotten dressed in the bathroom.”

I laugh lightly. “Yeah, that probably would have been a good idea.” There’s silence as I finish buttoning my shirt. Then I grab my brush and turn to my fiancé. “So I was just wondering… When do you want to get married?”

Joe smiles at me. “I was thinking springtime. Like when all the flowers are in bloom. Ya know?”

I grin. “You mean like, April showers bring May flowers?”

Joe’s smile widens. “Yeah, exactly like that! Do you um, want to get married in May?”

I nod. “Of course. The flowers will be so pretty. I’ve always wanted to get married in May. I’m glad I didn’t have to talk you in to it,” I tease.

“You know you don’t have to talk me in to anything,” Joe says. “I’d do anything for you.”

I smile lovingly at him. “I’d do anything for you too, ya know.”

Joe nods, smiling softly. “I know.”

“So, this May or the following May?” I ask.

Joe makes a face. “I don’t want to wait almost two years,” he says. “But is eleven months enough time to plan a wedding?”

I shrug and give him a grin. “It better be.” There’s a beat of silence. “Will you even be old enough to get married next May?”

Joe laughs. “What? You don’t know when my birthday is?” I blush. “Some fan you are,” he teases.

I stick my tongue out at him and toss my brush back in my bag. “Just because I don’t know your birthday doesn’t mean I’m not a fan,” I tell him. “It just means I’ve gotten past my teeny-bopper stage. I’m not in it for the boys anymore, I’m in it for the music.”

I move to stand between his legs as he lays back against the mattress. I lean over him, a hand at either of his shoulders. “Except for when it comes to you.” I move down to my elbows, moving in till our lips are just a breath apart. “I’m just in it for the sex.” Joe moans quietly and I capture his lips with mine. His hands are in my hair, pulling the elastic from it and his legs wrap around my waist, his hips grinding in to me.

I pull my mouth away from his. “No time for that,” I tell him. “Remember we have time restraints.” Joe groans and drops his legs from my waist. I grin at him. “I love you, baby.”

“Love you too,” Joe grumbles. I can’t help laughing at his annoyance as I step away to put my hair back up in a sloppy bun.

“C’mon, babe,” I say, hefting my bag over my shoulder. “Lets get a move on.” Joe stands, stretching his arms over his head, his shirt rising up to show a sliver of flesh. It sends a shiver down my spine. The singer moves to my side and takes my bag from me, lifting it on to his shoulder. Then he takes my hand and leads me from the room.
