Soliciting travel advice

So I may be going to England in the fall- September/October.  I've never traveled internationally alone before, and I've never been in the position to make decisions about where I'm going and what I'm seeing.  I've been to England a lot in the past to see my family in Newcastle, but my experience of it has been limited to that and a brief stay in ( Read more... )

I had decent luck with the YHA hostel I used in London. From what I've heard rom other people they're generally good across the board. They're not the cheapest hostels out there, but they've got decent standards.

Feel free to contact me with specific rail questions. I can't remember if you can just get a rail pass these days as a tourist (it's never made sense for me to do so), but otherwise I think you mostly have to buy tickets on the day since I'm guessing your credit/debit cards are American (their website and possibly their phone line only process UK). You can get schedules online and in stations for sure.

You might want to look into the Campaign for Real Ale guide if you're interested in real ale (basically what we call microbrews) and real ale pubs. It's pretty good and while it means you'd eat a lot of basic pub food, it's generally good (we had a family holiday where dinners were basically picked out of the CAMRA guide).

I'm not sure exactly what to suggest for you to do since I've never been there at that time of year, but in London my favourite place ever is the British Library (yes, I'm a geek). Umm... if you have any more specific questions here, too, I might be able to dig stuff up.

Ooh, Campaign for Real Ale! I love it! Thanks for hooking me up with that!

I will be asking you more questions about the rail as I start to plan this more in depth. Thanks!
